Powder choice questions
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:23:31 PM »
I need powder choices for full case [100-110%] capacity loads for 454 casull, 45-70, and 357 maxi.  Without blowing up my Handi rifles, or breaking my shoulder again.

For both plain lead and paper patch lead bullets.

Usual load data give me partial case fill.  I want full cases, so what slower powders I figure.

Thank you.

That's a tough one.  May be a job for Trail Boss..

I agree, Trail Boss for the maxi and casull and XMP5744 for the 45-70! Neither will likely be completely 100% full but close and made for just this purpose.

Good luck,

If you do use Trail Boss, don't compress your load. I understand it will have some pressure spikes at that time.

For the 454 and 357 Max  try RL 7,  for the 45-70 try something like IMR 3031.
There is published data for those loads.       Jedman

About the only powder that you are going to get 100%LD in the 45-70 is Black Powder. Accurate XMP5744 is not position sensitive so you don't need 100% LD.

If you want reduced loads, use Trail Boss. If not, I'd try 4227, 5744, or Reloader 7.

Start browsing the manuals, I found compressed loads for all three of them in just the Lee manual, mostly AA8700, AA4350 and AA2015.

Just have to ask , Why use more powder than you have too ? There are plenty of loads that will work very well @ less that full case fill . Why spend more $$'s than you have too .
