Help with sighting in T/C Treehawk
« on: December 16, 2011, 01:15:14 PM »
I just bought an unfired Thompson Center Treehawk .50 Cal caplock which has a 1 in 20" twist that limits me to conical bullets. I went to the range today and tried 80, 90, and 100 grains of pyrodex with a T/C maxi-hunter 350 Gr. conical. I was shooting very high (about a foot and a half) and I bottemed out the rear sight but was still about 6" high at 25 yards. I shot a few at 50 yards and they were quite high as well.
I understand that this isn't the most "traditional" muzzleloader as it has a synthetic stock, fast rate of twist, and a short barrel but I was hoping someone could offer some advice on how to make this shoot point of aim. The front sight is non-adjustable and does not lend itself to filing it down because it has a bead which would be comprimised with a file. I've only shot pyrodex and wasn't sure if it burns hotter than black powder ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This muzzleloader is similar to Thompson Center's White Mountain Carbine as it has the same bbl length and rate of twist. I think the White Mountain Carbine was more popular than the Treehawk and it seems many people that have them like them alot.
Thanks again

you need a lower rear sight or to file the notch deeper. perhaps a tang sight would let ya get low enough. even if it wasn't a bead filin' the front sight ain't the way to go. that would make the gun shoot even higher. luck to ya and have a good'en friend, bubba.
fetch the hammer maggie-they's a bee on the baby's head!

I don't own a Treehawk, but do have White Mountain Carbines. On the WMC the front sight is in a dovetail, and can be tapped out, with a brass drift and hammer. (I have changed sights on mine). If you are shooting high, you need a taller front sight. Check with Williams Sights, customer service,  as I have gotten sights from them in the past, and they carry a good selection.

Thanks for the advice. I tried shooting it with a lighter (275 gr maxi hunter) and it was still too high so I'm probably going to have to swap out the sights. Thanks again
