I have a sweet spot for Remington Mohawk 600 and 660's. I have a .243 and was thinking about getting a 308, but i discovered the .350 rem...

Does anyone have any experience with this round?

Yes I purchased a used 350 in January this year and have been working up loads and practicing alot, for upcomeing deer season. Mine is a model 7, used was what they called it, new is closer to what it was to me, the fellow who owned it before me busted his nose with his thumb shooting it. Had less than a box of shells through it, I freely admit it does have alot of recoil. From what I've read the 600's did also. I haven't hunted with it yet but have shot about 200 rounds through it so far and found it quiet acurate for a large caliber. I purchased this rifle with the hopes of someday hunting big game with it, maybe moose, black bear or elk. Guess you could call it the first short mag caliber. One word of advice if you don't reload for it this is an expensive caliber to shoot but then most calibers above 338 are an expensive proposition. As for me I am an avid reloader with access to a shooting range so I'm learning this rifles's likes and dislikes, The ballistics match up with 35 whellan except the barrel is 4 to 6 inches shorter so the velocity is just 100 to 200 fps slower then again if you lopped of a 35 whelan's barrel I believe they would be ballistic twins. I'm sure this little statement just started a war with the whellan fans.

Everything I have read pretty much says that the 350 and the 35 Whelen are pretty equal. But that is with bullet weights up to around 250Gr but beyond that I would have to give it to the 35 Whelen but the problem there lies that to use the heavier bullets in the 35 Whelen you need a 1-14 or 1-12 twist where as the factory built rifles from say Remington used the 1-16 twist which pretty much limits them on the weight of the bullet that they can handle accurately.

But yes in the Remington 600 frame it will be a light hard kicker but a handy rifle. From what I remember Cooper used this rifle with a scout scope set up with good effect. Also from what I remember he pioneered the Scout Rifle set up as well. This scope set up might be worth looking into as it will keep your head far away from the scope.

Not a fan of the traditional scout scope set up. I'd rather use an Aimpoint micro..

I bought a 660 this year. I load 50gr of IMR 4895 and a 200gr Hornady FTX bullet for a velocity of around 2150fps. The load shoots great for me and cuts the recoil.

I really like the .350. Look on the Chuck Hawks site for his preferred load with a 220 grain Speer. It shoots well.

Mine is a Ruger 77. Mod. 7 recoil might be sharp, but I'd like to have one! I wish they had a Mod. 7 in .358 Win as well.

Welcome to the .358 caliber fan club. You will be very pleased when you lay the smack down on your first big critter with a 350. I feed 4 different 35 caliber rifles, 2 of which are 350's. One is a remington 673 the other is a Remington model 700 with a 20" barrel. One problem with the Remington rifles in the 350 is the short magazine length so some of the heavier bullets have to be seated very deep. I have found the old Herters 250 RN to be plenty short, also the Speer 220 gr, and the Sierra 225 gr boattail. My 700 likes RL15 and the 225 Sierra, its right around 2600 fps. I'm hoping to shoot an elk with it in the next couple of weeks. Don't be afraid to shoot whitetails with your 350 either. Trust me it is not over kill. One big hole you can eat right to, and usually the deer hits the dirt right where he was standing. I used my 673 with a 220 speer for several years exclusively as my go to deer rifle and took some well out past 200 yds. Good luck and let us know how your project goes.

Have a Remington 673 in .350 Mag and love it. Mine wears a Leupold 1.75 x 6 x 36 VXIII. Mine loves IMR 3031 and the HDY 200gr
Spitzer bullet. Got a couple of .35 Whelens and use the same loads in the .350 Mag that I use in the Whelens, only pressure and velocity
is lower in the .350 Mag. Easy to reload for, only set up your resize die to headspace on the shoulder and not the belt. That way your
brass will last a lot longer!

The 35 Rem is a good round but nowhere near the capabilities of the 350 Mag or the 35 Whelen much less the 358 Winchester.

I had a 35 Whelen built and in the process of having a 358 Winchester built as well. Of which I feel will cover all of my hunting needs from small to EXTREMELY LARGE.

ex father in law hunted deer with one and swore by it. He complained it kicked hard and i read so many others who agreed with him that i just had to shoot it. I shot a box of factory through it one day and didnt think it kicked anymore then an 06 myself. Its one of the reasons i thought twice about divorcing his daughter as he told me it would be mine someday but i couldnt take 20 more years of high maintanance to get it.

I have a Remington Custom Shop Model 7 KS that I bought used.
I like the gun and I am currently working on loads. Finally got the 250 gr partitions to shoot into 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. My rifle tends to like fast powders (AA2230 and not 748).
The rifle is a light weight so it kicks off the bags and I had some movement of the scope due to the recoil. It has a muzzle brake so that helps.
I have a 35 whelen AI and that gun is a great game getter. I m looking forward to hunting with the 350 rem mag (bought it for closer ranges 150 yards or less).

Shot my elk about a week ago with one of my 350's. I used my Model 700, it wears a Leupold 4x compact, and I load it with 225 grain sierra's. I killed a 5 point bull that came in while I was calling to a bigger bull, he just appeared in some thick stuff I was hunting in. The shot was about 30 feet through some brush and cedar limbs. He hit the ground as soon as I squeezed the trigger. The bullet was recovered on the off side shoulder and weighed 220 grains. I will be loading more of the sierra's.

I had a 350 Rem. till a friend traded me out of it. Great cartridge, very powerful, mine was a Rem. 600--18", I loaded a 250 to 2500, a 200 to 2600. I also have a 35 Whelan 98 Mauser, 21" Bl. As they sat-- bullistic twins. If you take a 350 Mag. and put it in a 98 Mauser with a slightly longer throught and a 24--26 " BL. you can get a 250 up past 2600 FPS, by seating the 250 spitzer to the bottom of the neck. I tried this with a friends 350Mag. Mauser, working on a big game load, for him. Greg Bayes from Ky.

I agree with Greg.
But I am on the other side of that fence. I have/had all 35 calibers mentioned, sold the 350 Mag kept the Whelen largely because the short barrel wasn't that far above the 358 and it didn't like the 250g bullets and its short barrel and shorter mag limited the powder cap too much for my taste.
I looked hard at the 350Mag when I built the Mauser. But cutting the feed rains and the extra cost of opening up the bolt to gain little or nothing over the Whelen. NO adjustment to the feed rials, NO adjustment to the bolt face, 5 rounds in the mag, NO feeding issues associated with the Mags belt... All made the decision to go Whelen a no brainer. That was late 1985 or early '86. I received that gun form the smith in 1987...when Remington's Classic for that year was a 35 Whelen at HALF the price it cost me to build the Mauser...

My Whelen is a '98 Mauser with a 26.5" barrel, I get 200 gr bullets just past 3000, and 250s right at 2700!! With remarkable accuracy. So I am VERY HAPPY with my choice!

The 600 series IS a nice handling firearm and the half and half laminated stocks of the magnums are good looking! I hunt with a guy who owns a 600 in 35 Remington. he loves the little 35 and shoots deer regularrly with it.

Hi guys,
I've got a Rem. 700 Classic 350 mag.. Found some old Rem 150grn. PSPCL and put them over 61grns of IMR4064 for 2800fps. It was a little more than i wanted but they shot so well i didn't mess with them. Shot two deer this year with them and the were devestating. Shot a med. sized buck right on the shoulder plate broadside, bullet exited through offside shoulder about as big as a half dollar. There was hair, bone, and stuff sprayed for 20 feet. I wasn't sure the 150s would hold together at that speed, but my small sample of two says the will do just fine. Plenty of punch for white tails and not much kick, nice to shoot. just my .02 worth.

I just played with a Remington Classic in 350 remmag. I just didn't cotton to it, it didn't like the bullets I wanted to shoot in it, and besides, I am a far gone 35 Whelen Ackley nut, ha. I do have some new 350 rem mag brass I'll trade for some brass in 22-250, preferably new Winchester brass. I need to fireform some for my 22-250 Ackley Improved ( I told you I was an Ackley freak, ha!) I'll have to look but I think I have close to 80 new rounds of 350 rm brass. BTW, I got all my money back from a guy locally when I sold the 350 Classic, no harm, no foul, and I got to shoot it some. I know I would not want to shoot an elk load out of a Remington Model 7 in 350! Dang, that Classic was stout!

My 65 year old hunting pard shot two doe the first day of the season with a Model 600, 18.5" vent ribbed .350 Mag! One was shot with
a Hornady 200gr Spire Point and the other one he shot with a 180gr Barnes non tipped bullet. Both were shot at 103 yds and that little
carbine surely put em both down HARD. Both deer were impressed.

I have a Ruger M77 Mark II in 350 Magnum, 1:14 twist, 22" barrel.

This is the most versatile cartridge I have ever handloaded for.

Loves 190 to 225 grain cast lead bullets under H4895, SR4759 & AA5744.

It favors 220 Speer Hot Core FP with Ramshot TAC, H4895, IMR 4320. IMR 4320 is my favorite powder with 220 to 225 grain bullets. I can rock this bullet at 2750 fps and achieve 1" groups all day long.

Finally, I installed a Pachmayr decelerator recoil pad. What a big improvement. Also, give the Hornady 250 grain SP a try. This bullet shines with AA2460, AA2520, Ramshot Hunter.

I had one in an XP-100. A little too much recoil - traded it off. Still have the dies and some brass. I would consider building another one, in rifle format, if a donor action ever came my way.

I have a 350 but not in the 600/660, it's a 700 Classic from 1984 (22" bbl). Potent round, moderate recoil with my rifle. Cannot use long pointy bullets in it (Barnes X, Nosler BT and Accubond, etc.) in 225 gr. and up because of chamber length. I have a Whelen too (700 CDL) and it's pretty muc the same round with a longer barrel and slightly more velocty with handloads and larger bullets. Plus the pointy bullets work nicely. Not getting rid of either.

I had a 660 in 243 that I foolishly traded in on part of a Citori Lightning 28 gauge - wish I'd kept it. With respect to the 350 in a 600/660, I'm not sure it wouldn't be too much of a good thing in an 18.5 or 20 inch barrel. On the other hand, it's not going to detach your retina or separate your shoulder either not matter what barrel length.

Like the 600/660's? If you find one, get it. Like the slightly longer barrel of the Classic or new ones? Get it. Then go shoot pretty much anything. -WSJ

My 660 350 mag doesn't kick like I thought it would with the factory 200gr load. It's more of a hard push than a hard quick jab. I did make up a reduced load with Hornady 200gr FTX bullets that's shoots quite well.
