Got the colt today
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:29:08 PM »
What a neat little rifle. Only got to shoot it about 10 times before my finger wear numb and burning from the cold. It is shooting high and to the right but that will be fixed.

Makes a nice thump when that bullet hits the berm! Can't wait till it warms a little to be able to shoot it better.

Congrats on getting a great little carbine.  They handle great and yes they have a little thump.  If your barrel is mounted on a SB-2 frame, the colt can really come into it's own.  And if that's not enough for ya, ream it on out to the 454 Casull.  I'm not going to as I have 2 rifles chambered for 454 already.  No flys on the 45 colt when loaded to about 30,000 cup, gives plenty of thump on both ends. ;)   DP

Going to leave it as a colt. I forgot to mention the bore. Slugged at .4515" Perfect! This opens up a whole lot more cast bullets to be able to use.

Nice!  I took mine out for some exercise today hoping to get a shot at a deer.  No dice but I did miss a running shot at a coyote that I walked up in some stubble.  I put a Skinner Lo-Pro sight on mine and it's perfect!

It's my all time favorite Handi, and I wonder now why I waited so long.

It really shines if you reload for it, since it is a pistol caliber and with reloading you can then see it's full potential in a rifle, and you can load some really fun plinking loads for it also using big boolits and Trail Boss powder.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Yep mine with a 300 xtp HP knocked my first buck with it down with authority.  ;)  Love it for carrying all day.  8)

The grand old 45 COLT is near and dear to my heart too! If you hand load, its potential is unbelievable. I re chambered my Handi 45 Colt to 454 because I was constantly loading the Colt to max and wanted more with some of the new FTX 45 Cal bullets. I had begun to see the differences in ignition and wanted the benefits of the better Casull case with its Small Rifle primers. Plus the inability of these hot loads getting into one of my expensive Colts or Colt Clones...

On game, the 300 Gr's excel to say the least!

Good luck with it,
 CW

I had really eratic results with unique powder. Group really opened up at 50 yards. Almost 3 times the size of the others today. HS6 was also not very good. Blue dot and 231 seemed to work well. NO leading at all! I shot close to 100 rounds today. Bullet fit!!

If your shooting cast bullets, those powders can work well, but if jacketed there are much better powders avalible... Just sayin'

If it were me I'd get some advice from Paco: http://www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/45coltlevergun.htm

I use the Reloader7 data at the bottom.  Tough to beat, very accurate, very consistent.  ;)
