My oldest refused the offer of college.  He went off and joined the Navy.  Today he is going to night classes to obtain his degree, compliments of Uncle Sam.

The youngest realized early the importance of a degree.  He wants to be a military pilot, and a degree is required.  The wife and I had saved all his Permanent Fund Dividends, and put aside enough for him to get his degree.  He discovered my Veterans Status will pay for it so he has not touched his college fund as of yet.  He says that will be the downpayment for his house.  He thought of moving into the dorm on campus, but decided that was too much money.  He is staying at home, and commuting each day.

College is not for everyone.  Eric, my almost third son, is making far more than he ever expected operating equipment at a big Gold Mine.  Eric took four years of Automotive Shop in high school.  Upon graduating he went to work in the Chevy Garage, in the quick lube shop.  After a year he moved over to the John Deere Dealership as a Mechanic.  A couple of years later an opening came availiable at the Gold Mine and he jumped at it.  Several other of Sky's friends went into the Trades, after high school.  They are doing well as Plumbers, Pipefitters, Carpenters, and Welders.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

You bet the trades are well paid and becoming a lot more respected.

My boy wanted to go to an expensive private college, but I talked him out of it. He would have had to borrow a lot of money to do it. I told him that when he graduated he would want to marry and buy a house and a car, not pay off college loans. I convinced him to go to way cheaper State community colleges and 4 a four year State college.

I hired several young college educated kids every year in my work. I paid almost no attention to what school they went to, and not much attention to their grades. What I was interested in was what their previous employers thought of them. That said a lot more about them to my mind. I wanted a work ethic more than I wanted a fancy education.

Like Sourdough's son, my daughter went into the Navy right out of High School. Navy paid for her college plus she learned a serious career. She's a true wizard with computers. She's been in 15 years and counting. Her husband 18 and counting. They will both retire at 20 with full pensions and College Degrees. They'll be able to do pretty much anything they like. Not a thing wrong with that!  :)

Our son and three of his friends insisted on holding thier BSA Eagle awards together.  The smallest of them was one very bright kid.  He enlisted Air Force the week he graduated from High School.  He chose medical tech for his MOS, came back to marry his girl friend and left with her to finish a four year hitch.  The two of them took every class the Air Force offered, his in medical and hers in accouting.  At the end of four years they came back to california and he entered Cal Berkley to take an RN with credits for his AF classes while she supported him doing book keeping.  (Cal University classes have no tuition or fees for vets enlisting in and returning to california.) Two years later he had a 4 year BS  as an RN with a minor in Business Administration.  The week he graduated Cal he went back in to AF as an O2.  His first Officer posting was to the big medical base in Germany.  Since then he has gone to O4 and is planning on AF until he is 50 as an officer.  His wife has her degree in accoutning and works for GSA pretty consistently wherever he is assigned.  When he retires AF he plans to work as either Admin or teaching if he gets his masters degree.  Most amazing is that he told his Eagle Board he was going to do this, and then he brought it off.  Cost to his family $0.00.  One of his younger sisters is on the same career track in the Navy.
Smartest kid I ever knew.

My son wanted to enter the Marines, but decided not to when he realized that it would consume some of the best years of his life and they would control every aspect of his life while he was "in". I think it was a good decision.

Almost forgot what the topic was about lol! Kid's in school and the shooting sports are tied for most, it would appear. I know the feeling!  We have been raising  a Grandson after we lost our daughter in a traffic accident several years ago. He is a blessing, but on our limited retirement income we had to cut corners and my target shooting was one of the cuts. I shoot traditional muzzleloaders and 22's so that helps on the ammo cost, but with gas prices and the long drive to the shooting pit on BLM land it still has reduced my target shooting at least by half.

Just when I was starting to get good one hole groups..............................Uh! With only one shot ::)

Now that would be a topic I could chime in on.
I can shoot one shot one hole groups...if I hit the paper.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.
