sight change ?
« on: December 04, 2011, 08:03:07 AM »
Does anyone know of a direct replacement for the front sight on the talo trapper barrel ?
I would like to change the blade to a bead without altering the barrel on the rifle pictured below.

From the link listed above I am liking the Front Sight with Dovetail Ramp so that I could use the gold or ivory bead.

I would still like opinions of the configuration so that I could buy the correct one the first time.

On the Marble's site, did you look at the box below FAQs at the bottom of the page?  It has the specifications for the ramps and sights, and a little blurb on how to figure what you need.  I used it many years ago (20+!) to set up a H&R 158 .30-30 with the Marble's peep and a higher front sight.

Yes, I have been studying the chart.

It looks like the configurations are all wrong for my trapper.

The uni-ramp has the correct barrel diameter .750 but the sight height is way short, the trapper is .565 and the uni-ramps come in only .405 and .470

The dovetail ramp is wrong on barrel dia., But, I could use the .6875 dovetail ramp in .225 height as “Close enough” and add the .343 gold bead sight, as my trapper front sight height is currently .565.

All this would “work” as a front sight interchange, and I may go ahead and do it as funds become available.
However after studying the marbles site further I really like the “Bullseye” rear sight offered, But it would require milling a dovetail into the barrel which I was trying to avoid and finding the correct front bead to match.

Has anyone used the marble bullseye rear sight ?

You might also want to check out what Williams has for front sight ramps.  Theirs may be higher than the Marble's.

I have been putting a little thought into how to install one of the bullseye rear sights on my 357 talo trapper without dovetailing the barrel.

This is what I have come up with when I can pick up one of the long sights.
I can remove/grind off the dovetail and correct the profile, then drill two holes in the leaf to match the current William's rear sight screw pattern. I should be able to use the current William's mounting screws.

It should look something like the picture below (only smoother).

Any thoughts ?

Williams makes 'risers' that fit into the ramp dovetail to get the sight higher.

A riser will not work because the Talo barrel is "not dovetailed" and a riser in the current mount would lift the front on the leaf too much for adjusting.

See picture below for reference of the rear sight mounting.

Think I'd have to suggest: http://www.skinnersights.com/page_16.html

Would give you the peep and then pick up a merit adjustable insert, so you can vary the diameter based on lighting.  ;)

Thanks , Tacklebury

I have never been a fan of "Peeps", as I have tried to use them in woods many years ago and finding the right aperture for the different light conditions was a big problem and now that my eyes are older I can just imagine the problems I would have.

After looking at the pictures and ads on the marble site it looks like they may be correct that it will work in all light conditions.
Having the bullseye pattern I believe it would be much easer to pick up and follow game with the bullseye over a “peep”, but I have never had the opportunity to try one and would like to hear from anyone that has used one.

Yah, I think those would be good for big game/plinking, but I don't know about smaller varmints or longer range shooting.  I had considered getting a short ramp version for my Dad to try on his .22, but he got sick of trying and just gave it to me.  8(  I thought the Merit Adjustable peep might allow enough light transition back close to your eye to act kind of like the bullseye sight.  I use the TruGlo Ghostring Rear/Globe front on my muzzle loader because it comes on target nicely.  It is a universal and works on my H&R's also and has a few different mounting options including Various screw spacings and dovetail sizes.  I don't like it's lack of click adjustment as you have to be careful or overadjustment is easy to do, but once it's on, it stays good.  ;)  I've used it for 3 years now without changing POI once locked in.  Just another option anyway.  Here's a pic of the gun with it mounted and a fuzzy, sorry bad pic, of the sight picture.  ;)

I mulled over that same modification not long ago and came up with two possible drawbacks.
1. Lack of windage adjustment meaning it would have to all be done with the front dovetail ramp. That's fine so long as it doesn't need to be moved too far. (I don't care for sights hanging half out of the slot)
2. Using the elevator it would put a strain on the rearmost screw. Again that's not so bad providing you won't be needing a lot of elevation on a heavier recoiling rifle.
Aside from that I can't foresee any real problems providing both the barrel holes and the drilled holes on the sight are aligned TDC over the bore center axis. When I first saw the post on that combo it looked like the perfect solution for me too.

While it dosen't glow and its a bit old school. Its solid, durable metan. it attaches with two screws and will hold up to some real abuse.

I have installed a Contender fornt site on handis a couple times with excellent success. They are offered in different heights and are easilly grindable to lower heights is required.
