double rifle??
« on: December 10, 2011, 02:20:57 PM »
i've wanted a double since i saw "king solomans mines" but with an ex wife three kids, new fiancee and life in general i will never be able to afford a "true" double but what could one expect to pay for a "knock off" (mass produced non-custom) double in lets say 45-70 or similar caliber? or have a 20g or 26g shotgun converted with inserts and if its do-able what about extraction?

You should look at the Baikal double rifle.  Several people have posted feedback on the double rifle.

I dont know the importer in Canada.  In the USA the name has changed several times from EAA, Remington Spartan, USSG.

There is a firm in Canada that imports Valmet combo guns, they might have double rifles.

A buddy of mine bought a SXS 12 ga and cut down the barrels, I think too far, and mounted rifle sights on the gun.
He used the sights off of a Remington Nylon 66, but you can get a number of single and double leaf express sights.
Works well for deer and hogs with standard slugs and buck.
A SXS shot gun has a short regulation (where the two barrels intersect) a rifle has a longer one and the barrels are regulated to a specific load.
I am hopeing to find another SXS with ejectors and a beaver tail forend in a shop for a good price to change into a 25 or 26" barrel with rifle sights.
On the rifle note, Merkel makes a SXS 30-06, for about 7 to 10K

And Chapuis makes a SXS chambered in numerous different cartridges for under 5K, and i like it better than the Merkels...  I'd say it's the best deal by far, on a quality made DR that will out last you and your gran kids...

Here's the factory web,  http://www.chapuis-armes.com/ but it doesn't take much of a search to find all kinds of info, including factory build U-tubes vids ect...

AND good deals on Chapuis DR's, includeing DR's chambered in 30-06 and 9.3x74R.

The company has been in business for 75 years, and knows how to build reliable DR's, from their entry level guns, on up to highly engraved custom guns.

UGEX and the bbls are soldered into place, regulated for 285 grain bullets.  All the Chapuis i've seen were regulated well, and are accurate DR's...

Thsat's a fact! I've shot mine( alot ) and 2 others here and they all shoot very well. Scope mounting didn't change the regulation either.

I've also had some trigger time on the Bikals. Both 45-70 and the 30-06. Both  were easily adjusted to different loads and were accurate. BUT the stock needs some work to use the iron sights, the comb is way too tall. The triggers are terrible but a `smith can easily fix that with a good tune up. All in all they are a very good cheap/ beater entry level DR.
