I have expressed interest in this before with no answers on a other thread. Does any one make sabots for 45/70 bullets in the .459 range? I know this would cut down on the thickness of the sabot so maybe is not feasable but sure would be nice if there was such a thing? Jim

Go to www.prbullet.com/  and ask Cecil Epps if he knows where you could get them.  He does more experimentation on various sabots than anyone I know.

Got a reply back from Cecil said he was not aware of any such sabot. :( too bad it would be a winner for those of us that already cast for the 45/70 and want a long  bullet for our muzzle loaders. I wish Lee would come out with some thing on that order  of a 45/70 bullet only bigger to fit the bore of a 50 and 54 cal besides the bullet moulds he has for muzzle loaders now Jim

MMP already does-- for the Knight .52. One of the bullets used is a 350 grain, .458 Barnes. It doesn't sound like you want to buy a new rifle, though!

For your .54, .50 caliber sabots are stock MMP product.

Knight DID market sabots for .457/8  (.459 would be TIGHT) in a .50 cal.  Do a search for Orange Knight Sabots.

GunAccessories.com used to have them. Knight may have a bunch of them in a back room.  :-)

Thanks for finding them will order some and give them a try while my bullets are .459 they should still work I think just a tight fit. Jim

I sure would like to know the results after you've fired a few of them. I use the 405 SP in my Encore pistol and have plenty laying around.

.459?  That sounds like they are cast bullets - am I right?

If so, would you have any luck running said bullets through a .454 sizer or even .452?  It might be quite a push.

You are right they are cast and sized for my 45/70. sizing them that much would be a stretch and over sizing them would not do the bullet any good either tough on the grease grooves ect. Jim

This may sound like herasy on a ML board as you all probably don't have any new fangled reloading gear for "cahtrudge guns" but if you do why don't you just get a Lee sizer in .452 and push the .459 bullets through it?  That's what I did with some 350 gr hard cast .459 Laser Bullets.  They shot quite nicely in Knight sabots over 2 pellets of Pyrodex or 140 gr of ClearShot in my TC Blk Mtn Mag .50 cal.  Just a thought.

Thats quit a bit to size at once how did the bullets and grease grooves look after they were sized? Also I use Lee hand presses and they size my bullets in my 459 Lee sizer just fine but not sure if they would have the omph to size that far down? Jim

They looked fine but more importantly, they shot fine.  .007" is not really that much.  I size .326 cast bullet down to .318 for use in original 8mm barrel and down .312 and .314 for use in 7.65s and .303s,  they shoot well too.  If they are not already lubed I spray them with Dillon case lube before sizing.  It is a common belief that too much sizing destroys accuracy but so far I have not verified it.  Some of my most accurate cast bullet shooting is with as cast .311/.312 bullets in .308 bores.

Larry Thanks for the reply and the info. Not sure when I will get around to doing such a project as I have some other reloading supplies that are more urgent to buy. I agree I shoot some 311 in my 308 and they shoot well. Jim
