shorts in a single shot
« on: January 19, 2004, 02:31:53 PM »
i got an old .22 single shot that every time i fire a short in it i get what seem's to be a couple grains of burning powder thrown in my face. i know people say you shouldn't fire shorts in a long rifle chamber because it will erode the throat but my dad had the very same gun when he was a kid and he said it swallowed short's, long's and long rifle's without a problem. i've stopped using shorts but i like em for shooting cans near my friends cabin because they are almost silent and don't travel to far. anyone had a similar problem?

kevin.303,

How old is that rifle and about how many rounds have been thru it?  My fathers old single shot bolt action WesternField does the same thing but in reverse.  Shoots shorts just fine but will spray hot powder on you with long rifle ammo.  Even after scrubbing of the barrel and chamber it still sprays you with every shot.  Now it just hangs on the wall as a memento as I don't think anything can be done to fix it.  Lawdog

proabably made before the war but the barrel doesn't appear to be to worn. i might get rid of it or maybe just stick to long rifles. haven't tried longs in it yet

Kevin.303,

You should try shooting some long rifle subsonic rounds. They shoot about 1000 fps and are cheaper than shorts! Wal-mart near where I live doesn't carry them so I have to go to Dick's Sporting Goods to get them. I like to use them for shooting squirrels if houses are close by.
Squirrels are my game but, Jesus is my LIFE!   8)
