Drilling safe carry while hunting
« on: July 27, 2011, 06:19:13 AM »
Since the drillings are so versital a hunting gun, how does everyone carry theirs. Rifle barrel loaded with shot in one shotgun barrel & slug in the other.....Or?  ;)   Do you use a rimfire insert barrel? Hunt with the insert barrel in the gun or carry in your pack?

Great question.

The answer depends on what your hunting and what you think you might run into.

Dove Hunting: number 7 shot in both barrels.  In the cartridge case 1 Slug, 2 (00 or no.4)Buck and 2 no.4 shot or BB plus 5 rifle cartridges.

Deer hunting: rifle barrel loaded and buck shot typically no.4 and a slug,   In the cartridge case 2 Slug, 2 (00 or no.4)Buck and 1 no.4 shot or BB plus 5 rifle cartridges.

Hog Hunting at night, i am thinking about this setup.  Specifically barrel insert or not....

For me it really does depend on what i'm hunting, or at least what area i'm in, and the time of year.  In the fall, i most time carry it with the 22WMR insert in place, and all three bbls loaded.

In big game season, i mostly carry it with slugs in it, and the rifle bbl loaded.  Where i sit a lot, i get longer shots, so i just have the rifle loaded, and the scope on.  If i shoot a deer and it runs into the brush, i load up with slugs too, and pop the scope off.

Like i said, if just all depends...

for hog hunting I am loading the rifle with the largest rifle round I can find.  The left shotgun barrel is loaded with a slug and the right shotgun barrel with buck (00 buck  for 12 ga and # 1 buck for 16 ga).  The right barrel is the  backup in case I get charged.
