A friend of mine just brought a F.N Mauser over for me to look at. He is thinkind about buying it. It is marked as FN and has British proof marks on the barrel. It cocks on open and has a brushed steel safety and rear end on the bolt. The safety looks like a military style that flips up and hits the cheep Bushnel scope. The trigger is rounded, thin and feels like it is 6-9 pounds. YUCK!!! It is a .270
The stock fits the Tapered barrel very well but you can not slip a piece of paper between the barrel and the stock. The checkering is nice with a ring of dots around the base of the pistle grip. The finish is showing it's age but there are no scratches or marks in it. It just looks like the varnish is coming off.
My friend wants to know what it is worth

. I told him it would be a good start for a custom rifle but I would only offer about $400 for it. My thinking is Timney trigger, safety shroud, Float or replace the stock, Leupold scope, new rings........
He has a pre 64 Win. Mod 70 in 30.06. My thinking is. Put a Leupold on the Win. get the trigger cleaned up or replaces with a Timney. Put the collectable stock away and get a high quality replacement stock and you will be money ahead.
He shot my 270 and liked the fact that it didn't kick. I told him I would reload some mild loads for him.
The guy that is selling the FN is asking $700
What is your opinion?
