Slug & Sabot Components
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:34:40 AM »
Hi All,

Just got up and running loading the 12 ga Lyman 525 grain slugs.  I now want to try some other slug/sabot combos, but not having much luck finding anything.  A couple of years ago  I found a 12ga sabot that would hold a Hornady 500 grain bullet, but I lost the vendor name.  Also, another type of slug/sabot called a hammerhead that looked like a Hastings Laser Slug.  Any info. on vendors for slug & sabots would be appreciated.

thanks,

BB

BB,

The collet cup sabots are very expensive for their stated purpose.  Accurate, but expensive.

There are other options for slugs.  SPW load components are available from slugs r us.

BPI sells a Dangerous Game Slug which is basically a heavy slug with attached wad.  1.125 ounces.  Can be roll or fold crimped.  I used the fold crimps.

BPI also has the RSS sabot available for sabot slug loads.  Use straight wall hulls like Fed or Fiocchi for best results, and bullets of .510 to .515 diameter. Otherwise, the sabot will not engage the rifling for best accuracy.

For deer, boar, and black bear, stick with Lyman 525 grain slug.   Just my two cents.

ccs's are more expencive but if your looking to shoot beyond 80-90 yds. they work I've shot them at 150 with 3" groups. as for being expencive-not compared to commercially produced slugs. I've loaded the rss's -not too accurate out of my USH. Lyman sabot's from gardners cache are good to about 80 yds and then groups open up. did get a nice 6 pointer 2 years ago. CCS are the most accurate so far.

You can also try Lightfield Slugs, there Commander IDS Sabot slugs. Group very well out of my USH and 1100 Hastings. They are lighter and shorter than the SPW's. I was getting an average 1640fps. out of 2.75 hulls.

Greetings, I fully agree with my friend SwampThing,

Since we want a permanent wound channel, we need a bullet with bigger maplet that will cut a clean hole, rather than a tear, to cut a permanant wound channel, Lyman does that very well!
The only problem I face is powder seeping by the OP part of the wad like this

I usually cut regular photo copy paper 1" X 1" and push it on top of the powder before inserting the wad!

and when i get a 12g reloader i would like to load slugs also... (i have started shooting trap quite a bit thus i need a loader :)

thanks in advance
