I heard that winchester was coming out with a .257 WSM.  Has anyone heard anything more about this?   :?   Do you think that it would become more popular than the .25-06?  (Not necessarily "better" mind you, but "more popular.")

Nope. Don't see that happening. I figure most of the WSM and WSSM rounds will be dead and gone in 10 years or less. That's about par for Winchester's introductions. They will just be a flash in the pan and then gone. One or at most two of them might hang on with enough sales to allow folks to get cases to make the others but factory ammo for them will not be available for long.

I'd give their .300 WSM and .270 WSM the best chance of still being here in 10 years. Even at that I doubt either will be.

Yea, if I had to predict the "most likely to succeed" of these new short, fat magnums, it would be the .300 WSM first, and the .270 WSM in second.

I don't know about 10 years though.  I think that the .300 WSM will be around longer than that due to the fact that elk hunters would really like that round in lighter calibers, although time will only tell.

So far I am thinking the 270 WSM will be a survivor. My reason is that it improves upon the ballistics of a 270 Win. I'm of the opinion you dont get anything "new" with a 300 WSM, of which it's ballistics arent quite up to 300 Win or 300 Wby mag ballistics. The other one that may survive will be the 243 WSM, as it adds to the ballistics of the 243. It still doesnt reach 240 Wby mag ballistics, but it is getting close.  Some like the accuracy potential of the fat mags as they headspace on the case shoulder, and are beltless mags. I am not sold on them yet. Guess I am still evaluating.
Maybe there is something here, but I see them more as a gimmick to sell rifles. Maybe Winchester should focus on selling better rifles, rather than more rifles. My two cents, and that is all it's worth.

.30-06, .270, .25-06, .308, 22-250 all started out with the same
case (.30-06). Seems like all of them have been "AI'd".  Then so
has the .243, 6mm, .223 and on & on. Have any of these improved
versions become more popular than the rounds they have
"improved" upon?

Seems like they keep coming out with a newer cartridge that
will be "as good as", or "just a bit better than" such-&-such
cartridge already in existance.  The .243 WSSM is supposed to
be better than some 6mm mag, and the .223 WSSM is supposed
to be almost as good as the .220 Swift.  Sheeeesh!!!

On the other hand, I really "need" something like a .223 WSSM!

like we do dirty diapers.............
for the same reason.

Zachary,

I heard that the recent issue of Guns & Ammo(don't quote me on that) has a notice that Winchester is going to release the .257 and .338 WSM cartridges at the next S.H.O.T. show.  If so the .257 WSM will get added to my collection of Quarter Bores.  If anyone else has heard of the notice or if it was posted in a different magazine then PLEASE let us know.  Lawdog

Faulgur,
what "new" do you get with the 270 WSM that hasn't been around since the first Weatherby cartridge?

Well fellow hunters/shooters Winchester didn't bring out the .257 WSM(darn it   ) but they are going to bring out the .25 WSSM.  Supposed to deliver .25-06 velocities using less powder and more accurate.  I would still prefer the .257 WSM.  Lawdog

As a 25-06 owner, I love the 25.  The problem is the 25 is not all that popular to begin with so I don't see a 25 WSSM lasting too long.  The 300 WSM offers a shorter lighter action with the same performance of a 300 mag.  Lots of 300's are being sold at the local gun stores so I think it will be around for a while.

azshooter,

I wouldn't bet on the failure of the .25 WSSM just yet.  I went down to my local sporting goods store and put in my order for one and was told by the owner that I was #8 on the waiting list.  My cousin that lives in a larger metropolitan area ordered his and was told he had over 60 ahead of him.  I disagree with you when you say that,

because it's very popular with western hunters that I know.  From the survey's that I have seen the .257 is the #1 caliber for taking antelope with the .243 a very close second.  The early data on the .25 WSSM does keep in near the .25-06 but in a shorter, lighter action and rifle it may well find a home with the western plains hunters where crawling and walking is the norm.  Only time will tell.  Lawdog

Have to agree with lawdog on this one.  i think that the 300wsm, 270wsm, and the .25wssm will be around for awhile.  the 300wsm is not quite the 300wm but is a shorter action and seems to be a more accurate package.  i have a 270 and 270wsm the wsm is outperforming it in the speed and accuracy department.  i have also put in my order for the .25wssm as a long range critter gun.  as for the other wsm's and wssm's i dont think that they will be around all that long they dont quite add anything over there counterparts.

PAINLESS,

I too have placed my order for one of the new .25 WSSM's.  I still think the WSM line would have been a better choice but who am I to say.  I am finding out that there is a lot to the accuracy of these short, fat little cartridges.  My .223 WSSM is a lot more accurate than any .220 Swift I ever had as well as being around 150 - 200 fps. faster.  I am beginning to believe that the short, stiff actions along with the short, fat cartridge design being more accurate is the way to go if you are looking for better accuracy.  Sell your old rifle just to get one of the newer offerings, OF COURSE NOT.  But if you are in the market for a new rifle one really needs to look into these new short, fat little cartridges if accuracy is your thing.  Lawdog

What about the 243WIN, 270WIN, 30/30WIN, 308WIN, 300WINMAG, 338WINMAG, and 458WINMAG?
Seems to be some winners in that lineup.  Granted these have all been around for quite some time, but they are some fine rounds.
