How's Your Season Going?

How  has your Hoosier deer season been?

I haven't connected with any bucks, but got a couple of nice does. One with the maxi and one with my .50 cal Knight. No horns, but quite a bit of tasty protein in the freezer!

Funny how they get heavier every year! And, the hills get steeper and higher!

Here is the biggest buck I ever got with my bow, and I got it on  my 61st birthday!  It has six main tines and one brow tine. 6-1!  I was hunting with friends, and it turned out to be one of my most memorable days.

Got my Buck opening morning. Daughter stole my Maxi that morning, had to rely on my Mossberg 500. Took some doe meat with the Maxi thru the first week, and one on turkey day. My Knight disc has made a few trips, but has not gave up yet ;) . And Crossbow is still waiting for a turn.

Forestclimber, Nice buck, looks like a big snout on that buck.
Season still going here. Only really seen a couple of nice does. Lots of yearlings. 1 nice buck on neighbors property but couldn't grunt him over to me. Been letting a fewer smaller bucks walk. Weather looks to be promising for closing weekend of ml. No full moon either.

 Well muzzleloading season came and went, without any deer to drag home. I guess it is time to get the crossbow out. Weather was good, but the deer just didn't cooperate. Did find some tracks in an area I had not been hunting this year. Plus got my little area which is my go to for last resort hunts. I leave it for a safe haven. Usually gets hunted once or twice during gun season by a neighor. Then when I get desperat ;)  I really don't care if I get to claim another deer. I just like to go :D

Got a nice doe Sun. morning. Never seen a shooter buck in ml season.
Sure was nice getting to hunt in a little snow in ml season compared to wet/windy firearm season.

Not too good only had opening weekend because of work and I think it was too warm and windy..

I hunted 6 days during the early bow season and did not see a deer. On the opening day of modern gun season I saw a 4 pointer which I shot. 4 days later I saw a nice 8 pointer, of course he was safe. These were the only 2 deer I saw on my brother in laws farm. Not many gun shots even on opening day. The first day of muzzleloading season I hunted in Orange co and saw 2 deer one doe and one pretty 8 pointer but did not get a shot on the doe. So far I have seen 4 deer total for the year. The part that bothers me is on the in laws I am not seeing any tracks around my food plots or in the picked corn fields adjacent to the woods. This is unusual but the amount of sign has decreased a lot in the last 5 years and the number of deer seen during the off season has decreased also. I guess the deer reduction program is working in my area. I hunted nearly every day during the modern gun and its getting hard to get up and sit so long without spotting and deer.

I was blessed this year to end up with 5 antlerless from 3 different properties.  Two with bow, one with .358 WSSM rifle and two with muzzleloader.  Two went to our freezer and 3 were donated to 3 families that were in need of meat.  My wife also took her first ever deer on her first ever hunt.  It was a very nice 8 pointer that we are having put on the wall.  We are already eating on him.  She used a Handirifle chambered for .358 WSSM that only sees "light" loads (200 FTX going 2260 fps).

As much as the .358 WSSM Handi is a shooter, it is restricted to "light" .358 Winchester loads due to the lack of frame strength and I wish I had not spent that money.  Worked out in the end as I never really thought that my wife would pick up the habit of deer hunting and that might just now be "her" rifle.  I now have a Savage in .358 WSSM that will shoot full-power loads.

That buck was so heavy that she and I could not get it loaded onto the front of the atv for anything.  Had to put the wheeler in a ditch and drag the buck over to the bank where the atv rack was even with the ground and slide him on.  Now I am looking at fabricating a loader for the front end (like the PL250 Power Loader) that could also be swapped out for a snow plow.
