357 mag front sight help
« on: December 20, 2011, 03:45:30 AM »
i'm working on my "truck" gun and need a little help. I'm fortunate enough to have one of the older, lighter profile 357 mag barrels, and need to set it up with iron sights. This barrel is drilled and tapped for scope base and front sight and is dovetailed for the rear sight. I'm planning on using the wgrs peep(mounted in scope base holes), a dovetail filler, and need to set up a front sight. The front sight hole will not take a 6/48 screw...the 6/48 screw is too big. I also tried a smaller front screw from a late model Handi which i believe is a 3/48 which is too small. So according to the FAQ's(did my homework) what i need should be a 4/48 for the front sight hole. Does anyone have a 4/48 screw i could try or buy from you or tell me where i could get one? When i'm done i'll have the peep sighted 357 barrel, 25 1/2" 20 guage smoothbore modified choke barrel that fits the same reciever, with my straight gripped non Monte Carlo camo-lam stock set. A box of 357 mag ammo, a box of 20 gauge shotshells(#6 shot or so) and a small scabbard(gun case) that'll hold the gun and the spare barrel and i'll be good to go.....I hope ;) . I just need that 4/48 screw..........Mike

A Win 94 hammer extension is 4-48 if you have one of em, you might find a metric equivilent at the hardware store that will work.

thanks Tim....i was able to find the 4/48 screw at a local industrial supply place. Now to get the peep and work out the front sight height. I have a .530 Handi front sight but not sure it'll be tall enough........Mike

Haven't measured it, but I think the front sight for the .22 Hornet is the highest H&R sight.

I'm not sure which sight it is, but the 2008 parts list shows FR03872 as being .634" tall, FR03873(30-30 I think) as .578".
