Trying to find a good .50 cal. percussion with double-set triggers.

Have looked at the Traditions offering, would like better quality.

Does Lyman have something besides their single-trigger Trapper?

How about T/C? I don't even see one listed on their website.

Anybody have some input?

Rum River,.... Quite likely, yore look'n for the Lyman "Great Plains Rifle" (GPR)!!
The Lyman GPR, has double-set triggers, and is 'bout the most "authentic styled" production rifle on the "market", available in .50 and .54 caliburs!!

MidSouth Supply offers the Lyman GPR "kit", for less'n $250.00, and the "finished rifle" for a few dollars more!!

These rifles are also better quality, than Traditions!! :D

WHOA!!!!!.... Sorry!!.. Rum River,..... I thot you were ask'n 'bout "rifles"!!

No!!.... Lyman doesn't offer a double-set triggered pistol,.... Armi Sport, imported from Italy does tho, but I think it is only offered in .45 calibur, price is 'bout $300.00 and is better quality then Traditions.

TC, no longer offers the "Patriot", which had double-set triggers, and was also of "high quality"!! (It's even hard to find a "used" one for sale!!)

"Pick'ens" are rather slim, far as I know, for good production double-set triggered pistols!!  :D

You could go all the way to the top like I did with Siber 45 cal. target pistols.   They're still winning the European matches.

Here's the link at Hege Siber - you'll find them under Vorderlader Waffen and then Meister Waffen page 2.   Can't tell you what they sell for now - mine is from an old set and I literally stole it (with the presentation box, flask and starter) for a very good deal.

Hmmmm

I might have to re-think that Traditions. I'm looking for this pistol to outfit my 4-H group, so I don't have a big budget.

Does anyone out there have input on how well the Traditions model performs?

Thanks!

Rum River,.... Oddly enuff, for an "inexpensive" pistol,... the Traditions Trapper shoots good!! I've seen several thet will keep all ther shots in a 6" group at 50 yards from a rest!! The 2 most  important "things" the Trapper has go'n for it, is,.... the fast twist rifle'ns, and the double-set triggers!! :D

The Plains Pistol ain't bad.  I stoned the tumbler and the trigger pull is very nice.  Stronger than a "set" trigger, but otherwise not a bad pistol.

Since it's for 4-H though, I don't know if that's the route to go.  It's a heavy pistol, as is the Trapper.

I assume youths will be shooting it?

Traditions makes a Pioneer Pistol (.45) and a Crockette Pistol (.32).  Also Pedersoli makes a Kentucky which is in both .45 and .54.  The .45 is lighter.  But neither of these fits your .50 caliber and set trigger requirement.

I have a Trapper, and I like it. If you want to shoot it when the weather is warmer, let me know. The range is in Hugo.

Thanks for the responses.....

Rollingb; Were those groups with round ball or conical? 4-H will only allow round ball. Competitors shoot at maybe 15 to 25 yards.

Black Jaque; The age of the participants is age 12 to high school senior. Currently they are using a Fillipietta Remington '58 revolver, I want to switch to the single shot because:

a.) Easier cleaning
b.) Other than powder, it will use the same components as the rifles
c.) Most important, the club has agreed to let me have the Remington (which just happens to match my own personal '58 ) so I'll have two revolvers for CAS.

Eric N.; I appreciate the offer.

Rum River,.... Those groups were shot with roundball, and FFFG Goex blackpowder.
I assembled the Trapper "kits" for some fellow "club members", and also installed non-adjustable rear-sights, and replaced the Trapper's silver front-sights with iron front-sights, from TOTW!! :D

Rum Runner:

No matter what you go with, the kids will flip over it when they get a chance to shoot it.  I was a 4-H Firearms Safety Project leader ~15 years ago.  I've run into a couple of the kids (adults now), who still remember to time I took them out to touch-off the BP guns.  All the SMOKE and the primitive nature of these firearms really captured their attention.  Good times!

Good Luck and Be Safe!  ...Chris   :D

P.S. Try to find a TC Patriot if you can...they come up every now and them on Gunbroker and Auctionarms.  They're sweet!

Rum Runner,

Considering your reasons and the application, I would first compare the heft and ballance of some .45 caliber single shots out there.  You may decide that the .50 and set-trigger requirements are not worthwhile.  If you can compromise that, your selection will go way up.
