Deer season is over now
« on: December 01, 2011, 03:47:12 AM »
Deer season is over for me now, bummer.  My wife gave me permission to get three deer ($ for the processing is the limiting factor) this year and I got them all in 11 days during the Nebraska firearm season.

Deer 1)  Doe, shot at 33 yards, complete penetration and she only went about 10 feet from where she stood.
Deer 2)  Doe, shot at 77 yards, complete penetration, she ran about 30 yards.
Deer 3)  Buck, shot at 36 yards, because it was near the end of legal shooting light I thought he was quartering away but he was actually quartering towards me, bullet struck perfectly behind the shoulder and exited behind the diaphragm.  Not quite gut shot, but not my best work.  He ran a bit father, about 60 yards.

All were single shot kills.  My rifle was a Marlin 1895 in 45-70, shooting a 416 grain paper-patched bullet at 1665 fps.

I hope everyone else is having a good season as well,
Jeremy

9 point with a crossbow, 10 point with Mossberg ATR Super Bantam .308 opening morn. Done horn hunting 2 buck limit for the combined seasons in Oklahoma. Sure was hard to pass on a huge 7 point that walked passed my stand at 15 yrds the next evening but the law is the law. I carried my 1895 Marlin Cowboy w cast 405's doe and hog hunting. The does just plain disappearred the last 2 weekends of rifle season along with the hogs. Six more weeks of bow season though to cull a few of those.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Sounds like you may want to consider doing your own processing. I just de-bone and vacuum seal my venison. 5 in the freezer so far. May take another.

I usually take my first one in. They make a really good summer sausage. I get together with friends and we do the rest ourselves. I only have one so far this year but am hoping to get out a few times more with the bow. Our season ends mid January.

I got 2 nice does with the muzzleloader and a nice 3x3 buck with my Savage .243. My wife and I do all our own processing. I do the butchering and she helps with cutting chops and packaging. After we are done all the deer, we thaw out the trim along with pork trim and grind it all up for sausage and burger. I usually get a pig and butcher that up as well. It ends up being cheaper than just buying trim and we get pork chops and a few roasts too.

The deer have been AWOL this season; first time in years I've not limited out. Shot a doe, a spike, and an almost-18" nine pointer. Freezer is half full, but I've got until New Year's Day, I'll go a couple more times and a pal & I are going to walk some thick stuff w/shotguns & triple ought... we'll see.

This was the big one...

Funny but my two sons and I saw about 1/4 of the deer we usually see, yet we had a great year. Opening morning I grunted in two doe that were being shadowed by an 8 point at about 100 yds. He green scored in the 120's. The next day my oldest son shot an 8 point with his shotgun that went 140. The day after that my younger son shot an 8 point that scored 167. About 8 days later my older son got another 8 point with his ML that went 137. Maybe the sparse doe herd forced the buck to do more searching? Anyway, despite the fact that we hunted hard for two weeks after that, none of us got any shots. This AM was the last hunt, season's over.

We didn’t see the numbers this year that we have seen in the past but for drought conditions over the past five years the quality was really good.  I took two, a large 19 point opening day and an eight the second week-end.

As the sun set yesterday I sat in my blind and watched seventeen doe and a small buck on the feeder until they were interrupted by 20-30 hogs.  Normally I would just shoot down there “among” the hogs and let those that get hit run off and die but I passed on them too so my grandson could kill one.  He got a large boar right at dark, it smelled so bad I didn’t even want to tie a rope on to drag it off but did manage to get it moved to an area where we feed the coyotes.

We can still get some pig shooting in, but deer season is gone…………….

I'd say you've a great season alright, judging by photos.

Season ended here in NC 2 Jan. Tried a couple drives, nothing. The deer are locked down tight, completely nocturnal (at least on lands I hunt). There'll be next year to look forward to. AND... I'm going to learn to hunt coyotes, and hope to do some turkey hunting this spring.

Yeah, my wife always wonders why I don't like so see the new year ring in... Depressing that fall is already over even though I finished off the year with a bang.  Got this guy Christmas Eve morning, just feeding across a soybean field at 8am.  Had to pull off a 300 yds shot, and thank God my bullet hit true! A beast of a buck scoring a green 169 7/8" and left side G2 and G3 still covered in dried velvet.

Same thing here. The last cupla weeks none of us saw a deer in shooting light. Going into our private land muzzle loader spot, (state ML closes 2 weeks earlier) there's only one way in and our flashlites were bouncing off eyeballs all over the place. Once the dawn came, the deer were nowhere to be found. We're usually in our stands for an hour in the pitch black.
