Rebarreling Mauser 98
« on: November 11, 2011, 04:38:00 AM »
I have two Brazilian 98's in 7x57. When I determine which is the better shooter I intend to re-barrel the other. My intent was to go 257 Roberts but I have this Ruger No 3 barrel in .375 Winchester that is calling my name.

These may be questions for the wildcatter bunch but I thought to try here first.

Can a ruger barrel be re-threaded to fit a 98 large ring?

Will the straight walled .375 Win cartridge feed reliably in the 98 action?

The 98 was made to use rimless cart. The magazine box on all Mauser's were made to fit the round the rifle chambered . Some of the early Mauser actions ( not 98's)feed rimmed cart. from a slant magazine. You would have to over come the feed issue. As for the BBL. I don't know .

Well if you are looking for a .375 cartridge for your mauser, why not try a 375-06?. Load it down for target practice or cast bullets or load up for deer. Plenty of jacketed bullets for the 375 caliber and moulds for cast bullets. Frank

Shin,

I may be wrong, but isn't the .375 Winchester a rimmed cartridge?  If so, then it isn't going to feed through the mauser without extreme feeding problems, which may never be cured.  Remember, gunsmiths charge by the hour.   Sometimes, even experienced mauser gunsmiths have to tinker with the feeding issue for 2 hours or so, and  still not be able to give you 100% reliable feeding.

The absolute worse thing you can ever do is spend all of the time and money setting up a mauser 98, and then end up with a rifle that jams.  Do yourself a favor, and forget the .375 idea.  You will just be buying a big problem.

Go with the .257 Roberts.  I think that if you check with Midway, and Brownells, they may have threaded and chambered 98 Mauser barrel, in .257 , that are ready to go, at reasonable prices.

One thing to consider though, is that you are going to end up with a pretty darned heavy rifle, in such a mild cartridge.  You may be alot happier if you go with the .25-06.  It is a long action round, that will feed smoother than the .257.

Just my experiences.  (Once spent almost $2,000 plus a year of time setting up my "Dream 98 Mauser", only to have it jam occasionally, and with a chamber that was too tight.)

After I posted the 375 Win question the Rimmed Cartridge question occurred to me and I felt a little stupid for asking the obvious.

I probably will go with a 257 roberts. Always wanted one, have bought the dies, cases and bullets so I suppose a barrel would be in order.

Possible yes, but I would bet head space would be an issue. mayve a 375-06 AI.

I'd rather have a 7x57 than a 257 Roberts.

I have a few rifles in 257R and one is built on a 98 Mauser action.  Generally when I go to range to shoot, I take several rifles with me.  Most of the time I'll have one of my 257s with me.  Its a cartridge I enjoy shooting.  Its a flat shooting cartridge with a mild recoil.  P.S., another cartridge I enjoy shooting is the 7x57 mauser, which the 257R originated from.

Whelen - 35 - 06, 6.5 - 06 , 25 - 06 or even the gool old 30 - 06 are all good choices the will feed reliably without any modifications.

Just my opinion of course.

considering the 7x57 is one of the greatest cartridges ever designed by man,
I think chambering it for anything else would be a step backwards.
If the bore is in good shape that is. That said, I have always wanted one in .35 remington.

The 1908 brazilian 7mm mauser is a large ring receiver so the options are there.  You could pull the 7mm barrel and rechamber it to 7mm/08.  I really would stay with the 7mm .284'' round.
Go to;  www.e-gunparts.com and look in the 98 mauser section for the availability on the barrels/calibers.
