Using a 17 HMR in Alabama
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:15:12 PM »
Fellow Bammers,

Do you own a 17 HMR?
What do you use it for?
I find myself wanting one but don't really know what I would do with it.
Got a 22-250 for coyotes. Not supposed to use it on crows, but...
Hate to get a gun that I don't use.
Let me know.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Nope don't have one. I used to have one, got it to take to OK for prairie dogs. It's a bit much for squirrels and you sure better use head shots only with it. Should do OK on crows. Danged if I can see much need here in Bama.

I can't see having one. I'm happy with my .22 LR rifle and pistol...And I'd think the .22's would be easier to clean..

I have tossed the idea around several times to use on critters around the farm and just can't merit buying one. I can buy surplus ammo for the .223 for the same price or cheaper than an hmr. More energy, flatter trajectory and less wind drift than the rimfire.

Had one in Georgia before moving overseas.  If you squirrel hunt it is great.  I am a die hard squirrel hunter and you can head shoot a squirrel from a long  long ways in a hardwoods flat.  As with anything you have to be careful to make head shots but it is really easy with this round.  I haven't used the 20 grain bullets but I have read that they don't blow up like the 17 grain tipped bullets do.

I like the 17 HMR and 17 HM-2. Have built and bought several of each in both handgun and rifle. Do
not use either to shoot game to eat. Have killed everything from chipmunks to coyotes with the HMR.
It is not a round I would hunt coyotes with, but worked when it was what I had with me. I do not believe the HMR is moved as much by wind under 200 yards as the 22 mag. It will not have as much energy as the 40 grain bullet at that distance.  Instead of asking about them find someone that has one and shoot it some. Take a 17 HMR and a 22 mag and shoot them both. I did not replace my .22 mag guns with HMR's, I have and use both.

I got a Savage 17HMR HB/Thumbhole stock w/ 3x9x40 scope on sale @ Dick's Sporting Goods in Montgomery for $299.  It is 10 times more accurate than my NEF single Shot!  I took one rabbit with it @ +/- 100 yds and was glad the head shot I tried was just that! It didn't have a head!  I have free range chickens that are some times endangered by possums, coons and feral cats/dogs.  Nothing has walked away from my chicken yard yet! I am very happy with the round/rifle.
