204 Handi first time out
« on: December 19, 2011, 06:11:47 PM »
Got a 204 ruger last week, put a scope on it, ran a few patches through it, and took it out to the farm for a few shots. Most of my shots were resting on the forend, which I have not modified.  I was shooting factory 32g Hornady vmax.

I was pretty happy with the groups and hopefully with a good cleaning and a little work to the forend it will shoot a little tighter. I will probably try the rubber washer on the screw pillar first, and see how it shoots.

Run a few shots through it before you start working on the forearm. ;)  The 204's seem to be good shooters.

Depending what you are going to use it for make sure to put a very good scope on it. Some thing like on the low end 3-12x and up wards of 6-18 Lueplold I have a 4.5-14x40 Mueller on mine and love it but an upgrade would be to 6-18x40 side focus Luepold. I use mine mostly for Prairie Dogs your groups that you got there are about what mine does at 350 yards with little wind. You are well on your way to dialing it in. You should be able to get down to 3/8" and less. Work on your breathing I would not get in to much of a hurry to do much to it maybe run a patch down the bore25-30 times with some Flitz when you clean the next time. It is great to here someone happy starting out of the box there seemed to be many in the near past not so. But i think most of those were wanting to shoot the heavier 40grainers. My 204 is my funest to shoot PD with as you can see the impacts. No need to get crazy with changes yet just work the form then go to the accurizing tips when you think you got every thing else nailed. Congrats on the buy. Kurt

Thanks for the tips.......I will try the flitz to do a little polishing. I definitely put a cheapy scope on it. I will probably upgrade after the holidays and use some of those gift cards/money.
