I just picked up some Hornady brass and some 300 grain Barnes XFB bullets. I am trying to devise a good Elk hunting load for my new 1895 Winchester. Does anyone out there have any suggestions. - Mike

I called Barnes, they recommended five different loads. One of them was IMR4895 up to a maximum of 53 grains. I loaded 51, 52, and 53 grains with CCIBR2 primers. Average velocity was 1954, 2068, and 2104 respectively. This was with a chrony 15 feet from the muzzle. Considering that I was using the barrel sights accuracy was not bad at 100 or 200 yards. I have on order a copy of the Lyman 38 receiver sight. The spitzer Barnes bullets feed okay out of the magazine. Should be just the ticket for bear or elk out to 200 yards. I went with Marble's tang for my '95 and changed the front to an XO(was AO) white stripped front ramped blade. Works great. 2 1/4" 3 shot groups at 200 with '06.

I hear that Hodgdon now has some .405 data on their website . You might want to check that out ..................
