Barrel material
« on: December 25, 2011, 02:49:28 PM »
OK so pretty basic new guy question. I found a guy that used to have a machine shop and has some extra material floating around. What materials are OK for construction of a cannon. I know brass, bronze and steel. my questions are what grades I guess? like 4140 or what numbers. He has some pretty good pieces there and all are labeled just forgot what they were. Please let me know so I can learn more and definitely so I know what to get from this guy.
Thanks

It kind of depends on your designs and construction methods.  4140 is good stuff but doens't take to welding real well.  1018 is good for scale models (any scale) and welds well but you should stick to the 1:1 rule pretty closely.  Other things can be used but you need to know how it reacts to suddenly applied loads, among other things.
