Did Remington stop importing those Serbian made rifles?
« on: October 12, 2011, 08:20:35 AM »
A few years ago Remington was importing Serbian made Mauser center fire rifles, and I think there was a .22 RF model too.  I checked their website at the time and they never mentioned any imported guns, the gun magazines did reviews on them though.

I also read that the quality of fit and machining was often so rough that Remington's people had to work on them before they could be released to the public.  My only experience with Yugo (Serb was part of it) has been a Communist era M-48, and a Century Arms Intl. built AK-47 using American primary parts, with some Jugo add ons.  I also read on the curios pistol forum that their Tokarev pistols were real hit and miss, so it appears that the quality issue may have been valid.  I have been using Serbian made ammo for years and really like it.

I was interested as I consider the Mauser 98 to be one of the best rifles ever conceived and the thought of getting a new one at an affordable price was interesting.  Did Remington stop doing business with the Serbs?

Remington doesn't import them any longer. The are available thru E.A.A. Corp and come in 7-8 different calibers. There are still some of the Remingtons floating around new, ya gotta look for them. These are the same gun as the Interarms Mark Xs. I believe Charles Daly imported them for a while also.

Remington stopped importing them after just two years, and for good reason.  The quality was very poor.  Very sticky bolts, feeding issues, and some poor fit and finish.

It may be true that the rifles were made off the same blueprints or in the same factory as the Interarms Mark X, but there is no comparison.  The Mark Xs were very well made, and had none of these problems.

The Mark X was a very popular rifle.  They are really easy to find in VG+ and Excellent condition, as used rifles.

Don't waste your time with a new one, whether imported by Remington, EAA, or Charles Daly.  Buy a used Mark X and you will be very happy.  Mark X actions are well respected by gunsmiths and commonly used to build custom rifles.

One thing to be aware of.  The distance between the action screws on the bottom of all of these rifles is slightly shorter than a standard military 98 mauser, so if you plan to buy a replacement stock, you have to make sure that it is for a Mark X.

Quality was poor because Remington imported them to sell at a certain price point, they did the same thing to Baikal. Typical of  Remington!
