.223 Recommendation
« on: January 03, 2004, 02:48:51 PM »
I am thinking of buying a new .223 for varmint hunting.
I have a contender in 14" .223 and love it, shoot's under MOA.
Need a rifle to go with it, Must shoot under MOA out of the box.
Savage
Howa varminter
Rem. 700
Encore
Ruger 77
Looking for accuracy any thought's.
Also heavy barrel or not, I kinda lean toward heavy barrel's.
Failure is not an option

I have a Browning Low Wall in 223 and a Bushmaster Varminter. The Browning is a dream to carry and is 1 MOA. Still withholding judgement on the Bushy.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Dogshooter,

You may want to look at a tika-3. Very accurate out of the box. I think it's the best rifle for the money out there. Most all of them seem to be shooting under MOA out of the box. I know both of mine do.(243-30/06).

I would probably go with the encore, lots of available barrel options, you are already familiar with that style from the contender, and they are really nice little rifles.

I've got a Rem model 700 VSSF and I love it.  It's a matte, stainless, fluted barrel on a H.S. Precision stock.  Right now it carries a Simmons 44 Mag. 6.5 x 20 scope.  At 200 yards with factory rounds I can knock acorns off the top of my target stand.  The only downfall of this gun is that it is heavy 12-13 lbs.  Most people pick up the gun and ask how I can hunt with that.  I tell them that this gun isn't for close ranges where they do the shooting.  It's for reaching out and taking something out at very long distances.

Good luck at making your decision the 223.  Is a great round and when mated with the right gun and shooter, can be an awsome combination.

One you might consider is the new Remington LV SF.  It is a stainless light carry varmint rifle with a fluted free floating barrel and weighs just 6 3/4 pounds.  It is the light alternative to the VS SF.  They are at gun shops now so you should be able to go fondle one.

Well, as a long time TC user (1969-70) I also like their being light to carry and short enough to swing even in thick brush.   I have several, but my favorite Contender calling rig is a wispy 18" Brown chambered in 6X47 that wears a Choate folding stock.   But since I hunt alone and quite often call in multiples when out calling, the single shot does become an annoyance - so I carry a backup pistola as well.   Been calling predators for over 30 years, but in my minds eye now days, a short and light weight "repeater" is the only way to go for a calling rig.  The 223 is an excellent choice, but I'd opt out for one of the small bolt guns if I was buying one for the first time now days.   I bought a Rem 78 Sportsman in 223, and it is laser accurate, but is just too heavy and long for the miles I walk and the scrub I usually set up in.   The Remington Model 7 line is a good place to start looking (or any others that are compareable to it).   Way more accurate than you'll need for the distances you'll be shooting at too.  Just some thoughts to ponder.

hylander,

Of the rifles you posted Savage is being considered the most accurate out of the box rifle going today.  From what I have seen at the range I have to agree.  My son bought one and it is extremely accurate.  I have decided to join and get my own Savage in one of the new WSM cartridges.  My vote is go with the Savage if you want accurate out of the box.  Lawdog

Why not another contender? maybe a G2. 23" bull barrel. I think it would be perfect.  KN

I own 2 different Savage bolt rifles, one in .243 and one in .308.  Both are sub MOA out of the box with cheap factory ammo.

Also, just bought a Bushmaster V-match, flat-top version with 20" bull barrel.  It also shoots under MOA with cheapo ammo.
