Leupold VX-R vs. Zeiss Conquest
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:39:40 PM »
I'm looking to add a quality scope to help with those first and last 30 minutes of daylight.  I have it narrowed down to these two scopes in 3-9X40.  The way I understand it, the Zeiss may be a little brighter/clearer but the illuminated dot and almost as good optics would work better for low-light conditions.  Anyone else have any input to help me with this decision?

Ive got 2 3x9 conquests. I also have a number of leupolds including vx2s and one vx3 that is a 3.5x10. In my opinion the conquest are overated. Some guys think just because they say zeiss on them there majicaly something special. Granted there top end scopes are but the consquest are on the line of a vx2 in optics. A vx3  or a nikon monarch all have better low light performance then a conquest. Ive never owned a vxr so i dont know how they stack up against the other leupolds. Now im not saying that theyd blow away a conquest. Conquests are decent scopes.

I went with the VX-R.  The reticle is a little on the thick side for precision work, but this is on a hunting rifle and the edge it gives me at dusk and dawn are worth the trade-off to me.  I will consider the Conquest on my next rifle, a .270 or .300 WSM that will see more long range action.

Anyone care to comment on the illuminated recticle.  Never owned one.  Works nicely on a bow but not sure about a rifle.  Not referring to a red dot but an illuminated scope with high magnification.

I have always had Leupold Vari X-111,VX-111s on my Weatherby MKVs, Winchester Model 70s, Remington 700s, Sakos & CZ550s, I got a new VX-3 & absolutely loved it. I decided to buy a spare scope to carry in my pack with Warne Lever Mounts. While focusing & zeroing this new Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, I was astounded at the brightness & clarity & how black the reticle is & remains at all times.  I waited for nightfall to do a comparisson with all my Leupold 3.5-10x40s. until it was too dark to see anything, I tried again before dawn looking across a paddock to a big Gum Tree 443 lasered yards away. The VX-3 was better than the VariX-111 & VX-111. The Zeiss Conquest was the best of the lot. I bought several more Conquests to hunt with for a final opinion. Today I no longer have any Leupold Scopes. All my rifles have Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 & my CZ550 9.3x62 has a magnificent Zeiss Victory Diavari 1.5-6x42 #8. I am going to put a Zeiss Victory Diavari 2.5-10x50 #4 on my Weatherby MKV 300 Weatherby Magnum. I have become a devoted Zeiss fan & hold them in the same esteem as I do Martin Guitars.
