Weather and Beaver Activity
« on: January 18, 2004, 03:10:10 AM »
How does the weather affect beaver activeness? Do they like wind, rain, etc.? How about muskrats? I went out yesterday and found where some beavers are cutting trees regurarly down the river. I moved my castor mound 330 set down there. I also found a couple of rat dens and where the had been crappin on a halfway submerged log. I put a 110 in front of one of the rat dens, placed a #1 coilspring on the log where they where climing up, and made a pocket set lured with rat lure and the bank across from the dens. It rained all night but the river only got up  4-5 inches. When I checked those sets this morning I did pick up a coon in the pocket set but I was hoping for a beaver or a muskrat. I was just wondering what type of weather these two critters are most active in?

Thanks,

Wind is not a friend of water animals.A calm ,warm, misty night will see a lot of water rodent activity. Now this is'nt to say they don't move in the wind(I have caught beaver in sets that were being hit by whitecaps),but calm nights will produce more fur.Heavy rains will also cut down on activity.
Fish, here in the north both beaver and rats are super active before freeze up.It is the last time they will see the light of day for a while, they are working on their houses and gathering food.
