Sportster 22 Mag

I was hoping to get the insight of those who have first hand experience with this gun. I was hoping to hear how accurate they were and what the typical price they run...for some reason I bought a bunch of 22 mag for a really good price and yet I have no rifle....I know thats a little backwards. Thanks for your help.

I bought one yesterday. Mounted a Nikon 3x9 prostaff with weaver base & quad extra high rings. Should of gone with just high rings, as scope sits a little high.
 
Have some CCI 40gn HP ammo on hand. Will give range report later this week.

My UV isnt the most accurate, but I havent tried 'all' the ammo choices either, just the ones I want to use and they are 'satisfactory' for my purposes. IIRC, the 22 mag is not, typically, the most accurate RF anyway, so dont expect it to equal or best your match 22LR, but it does reach on out there with some smack.
FWIW, I like mine, and my 22Hornets and other high priced 22mags have gone. That said, where I in the market today I might well be looking at the HB Savage bolt gun with AccuTrigger; my 22LR version is a wonder right out of the box, box those arent 'traditional' single shots.

I have a HB Savage 22lr and it seems to shoot whatever I feed it really well. I have one of the BSA Sweet 22 scopes for it just need to get it mounted and see how she does.

I have had one and it was OK nothing great, but serviceable for sure. Maybe 3/4-1" at 50 yards or so. I sold my barrel off after buying a 17HMR. It shot so much better it wasn't a hard choice. Thats just mine as all are different.
 
I do like the 22M and I have other guns that shoot it better. Heck, I have a single six that shoots almost that good at 50 yards! LOL

I had a savage in 17hmr in stainless synthetic it was a shooter but discovered I liked shooting a lot more than I could afford at the time so I went back to just the plain old 22lr. Can't say I regret it.

Well just got back from the range. My .22 mag sportster is a keeper. Shot numerous groups under1" @ 100yds using CCI 40grn HP ammo.
 
 I have many rimfire rifles but, this will be my new truck gun.

So. for $159ish you have a sub-min. of angle 22M RF, you know, the kind of thing guys spend big bucks on trying to make/build, and with cheap ammo too.
Some would say thats just plain wrong......

i just found mine sitting beside the safe in a dark corner bought it 3 years ago and totally forgot it, mine came with a 4x scope and mounts--new old stock......think i put a bushnell banner on it ---it will be my new truck gun for sure. Dilla's & coyotes beware!!!!

Hey Moose, how you been!! That .22 Mag will make a great gun to keep at your new camp, it could even take out a deer if needed (and if legal of course). I use mine for coyotes around the camp and along the Golden Road, and Dick has one as well.
.22 Mags are legal for deer in Maine but I'm not too sure if I agree with it. Of course I have talked to a few old Mainers that kept thier families fed with .22LR's, and it was not just Partridge and Hares (rabbits), it was deer meat as well, but that was years ago and in a different time.
How did you do with the "four hundred and ten" for rabbits? Any rabbit stew on the stove at camp?....<><.... :)

MSP - How did you make out rechambering  the 22 VP barrel into 22Mag?  I was looking forward to a report.  Did you ever complete the project?

Not so much off topic buddy, it's still about a .22 Mag. Yes, my .22 Mag VersaPak barrel is a real keeper. It is MORE accurate than it was as a regular .22 LR barrel. I think this has worked out the same for others here who have done the same rechamber as well and hopefully they will chime in with thier results. I did find out there are two different reamers to bring a .22 LR chamber to .22 Mag dimensions. One is for a pistol or revolver and the other is for a rifle, you want to use the reamer for a rifle. Try it, you WILL like it....and in a emergency you could safely fire a .22 LR round in it, IF you had to (I know because I have done it to see if it was possible)....<><.... :)

MSP Ret---thanks for the advice today---got the weaver quad locks rings on the sportster tonight--- topped it off with a bushnell banner in 3 x 9---- should make a nice camp/truck gun for sure!!!!! Looking forward to getting back up to your camp and see you guys!!!!!

IIRC, Way back, Ned Roberts (.257 Roberts) used the father of the 22Hornet, the .22WCF on deer, with proper bullet placement, of course. He was quite a match shot and experimenter. The 22. Mag meets or bests the ballistics of the .22WCF. Now, I personally would rather use something with a little more 'authority', but in a push come to shove I am confident it can still do the job.

Thanks for that info gcrank1. Moose, the latchstring is always out, but perhaps you could bring up a bunch of those Georgia deer to help restart the herd. Not much snow so far this year, perhaps the coyotes won't have a banner year killing the deer again this winter....<><....:)
