Favored 30-30 shorty/pistol loads?
« on: January 08, 2012, 04:10:51 AM »
So, I have been asked to NOT shoot my favorite 30-30 loads, from the shorties, at the local indoor range any more. Apparently the resulting ball of fire, which I find exhilarating, strikes fear in those on either side of me  :o

There is no question that H335 is extremely inefficient under a 125gr bullet, from a 16.5" bbl; but that load shoots GOOD in every rifle that I own. It is my go to!

Varget is more efficient, as evidenced by far less powder still burning after the bullet has left the bbl, but has not proved as accurate. (still plenty accurate for hunting)

I am curious if anyone would mind sharing a pet load for their shorty 30-30 with 125gr bullets, that produces good velocity and accuracy, without the massive fire ball effect.

Thanks,

Steve

Kinda narrowed minded folks at the shooting range ain't they? ;D
Check out the pistol loads at the Hogdon site:
http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

Using the faster burning powders will help on the lovely fireball emmitting from the barrel,
Course if you rally want to get banned from the range load up some Black Powder ;D

Try Accurate 2520.  Minimal flash and very accurate in my Winchester 94 Trapper.

Stay away from RL7. It burns slow and would have a tremendous fireball. ;D  Accurate nonetheless.

never checked for a fireball, but in my contender I use 37 gr of 748 and the 125 Rem PSP, use the same for the handi as it turns out, just have to seat them wat deeper.

The best way to reduce the fire ball is to see is suppressors are legal in your state and get one.
We put mufflers on motorcycles, cars, trucks, lawnmowers, chainsaws, and everything else that has a loud exhaust.

Hmmmmhhh!!! Light bullet, slow powder equals 30-30 flame thrower, I like this idea. 8)   Only 30-30 I have is a 20" barrel MD94 AE so the hacksaw is out.  Guess I need a really slow powder and maybe a box of 110 grain bullets.  Gun show this Sunday, maybe buy some surplus 50 BMG ammo, pull the bullets and see what I find. ::)

i get the same complaint outside...lol, even had one guy grumbling about how much powder i was wasting. i'm using 33gr w/125gr nos bt and i guess the fireball is about 3ft long coming out of the barrel(20in topper barrel) once warmer weather comes i'm going to chrono these and work back a little at a time till i find a more efficient charge weight without losing much velocity.

AV, with 335?

I am at 34gr, i think. I don't know how far the flame goes because I have not watched anyone else shoot it indoors, in low light, or when I was paying that much attention. But, I can tell you that the flame fills the whole scopes sight picture, and the guy to my right claimed concern that I was going to catch his ~2yard target on fire  ;D
