TC New Englander 54 cal with Sabots?
« on: March 25, 2013, 05:11:06 PM »
I just got one of these rifles, it is a 54 cal and I was wondering about shooting the 240 grain sabots that came with it. Will this gun shoot sabots well? What charge of Pyrodex RS should I use? I hunt deer only. Thanks Craig.

Not sure how your New Englander .54 will shoot sabots. All you can do is try. It has a 1 in 48 twist, which may be a bit slow for sabots, but it is woth a try. Start at 80 grains, and work up in 5 grain increments. I have 2 New Englanders in .54. One has a 26" barrel, and the other a 24" barrel. They both shoot those round shaped projectiles very well that we discuss in the traditional forum.

I have a few TC N.E's one of which us the Greyhawk in. 54
It shoots the traditional projectiles whether or not they are the planet shaped ones or the ones that rhyme with monical.
I tried sabots (TC yellow sabot and 250gr lead pistol boolit) from my 50 NE and found then to group poorly at 50yds with various charges .
Maybe they'll work for you??

Just to add; I read on another forum that the 54 cal sabots were much thicker than your regular 50 cal ones. In some cases the bullet and sabot would stay together until it struck the target.

This discussion that you brought up "Elbow " has given me the urge to do some further R&D as I have plenty of 250 & 300gr cast boolits to try ;)

I hope this isn't considered hijacking the thread, but I just purchased a Grey Hawk in 50 cal.  Would that barrel handle a saboted projectile?  If so, can someone suggest a load?  I was thinking about the using the TC Cheap shots (240gr all lead hollow points) with their Mag Express (black) sabots, over about 80 grains Pyrodex.
