Lyman GPR First Rifle Build
« on: June 27, 2011, 01:14:07 PM »
This is my first rifle build. I built a Lyman Plains Pistol last year (also posted here) to get some experience. I learned from a few mistakes on the pistol that I was able to avoid on the rifle. The glaring mistake I made on the rifle is the wood/metal fit at the rear of the lock. When I was sanding the stock, I set the lock in place but did not screw it in. It looks like it was not seated completely. When I assembled the rifle today I discovered the wood is a little high in that spot.

I hand rubbed 8 coats of True Oil on both the stock and ramrod allowing each coat to dry 24 hours. I used Laurell Mountain Forge to brown the metal parts. I only used stain on the ramrod which is hickory. I raised the cheekpiece so it is not so thick at the bottom of the stock. I also cut the forward portion of the comb back slightly to resemble early plains rifles. I added a silver front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear sight from Track of the Wolf to finish it off.

Very nice pab1

The barrel finish looks nice and even.  How did you like using the LMF browning?  I've never used it.  Tired the Birchwood Casey Plum Brown once and got poor results.

Thanks Semisane! On the two kits I have built so far, LMF worked great. Its very easy to use and gives excellent results IMO. I did 6 applications on this kit. I would apply it before work, come home and card the parts and do another application. I averaged about 12 hours between applications. The biggest thing you need is humidity. Its pretty dry here so I built a tent using an "a-frame" type ladder and plastic sheeting for the barrel. I put the other parts in a plastic tub with a lid. I boiled water and put it in containers in the tent and tub to increase humidity. LMF has instructions on their site too.

I was not happy with the wood to metal fit at the rear of the lock so I sanded that area down. I decided to brown the lock while doing 8 more coats of True Oil on the repaired area of the stock. I think the browned lock improves the look of the rifle.

Very nice build!  What kind of wood was the stock?  Doesn't look like the typical birch.

Semisane, look down in this forum, there is another thread on Laurel Mountain Forge barrel browning solution.

Thanks guys! Sorry for the late reply. I have been playing with my handguns the last few months and not checking this forum. Took her out along with the Plains Pistol for some range time today. Had a great time!
