Author Topic: Daughter did it. Topper 30-30 scores again!! (Read 1055 times)

Well my daughter is here for a couple days so today i asked her if she wanted to go sit on the stand a couple hours. Saw a little spike walking in that she couldnt get on in time but it made me feel good that she may finally be ready to kill a deer if we were to see one. About 40 min before dark a couple does walked out. Daughter kinda got shy and acted like she wanted me to shoot but i told her i had taken all the meat deer i was gonna take and if she wanted one to be her first deer she could shoot. Otherwise we would just enjoy watching them for a little while. After about 20 minutes and them coming in to about 45 yards she couldnt take it anymore. She said she wanted to take one. I told her to pick one out and follow it til it turned broadside and fire. As if on cue, the one she was watching turned broadside and stopped moving. She took aim and fired, sending the 125 gr corelokt into the doe's vitals. The deer almost fell, then turned and walked about 15 yards to the edge of the woods and laid down. She was done. Im a proud papa that my daughter took time to make a well placed shot to effectively put a deer down quick and humanely. She is elated. The little Topper is really a great rifle and im glad we found it.

Great story..Beautiful picture...beautiful daughter and above all, a proud papa. Those are memories never to be forgotten.

Joe- your topper story has been fun to follow since the day you found it, and now your girl got to get her first deer with it. This has been fun. Thanks for keeping us up on the happenings of the topper and the season. Congratulations to your girl -and you for being patient enough to keep taking her when she wasn't quite ready (until today). Joe congrats to you and your daughter.....you are a lucky man. And she has great taste in Handi guns, love the straight gripped stocks. What scope is on her rifle? I have a "lonely" sb2 frame(no barrel) and just this morning picked up a older,lighter profile 30-30 barrel in the classifieds. I have a PW pistol grip straight comb buttstock that i'm gonna take a shot at converting to straight grip and i'll have a rifle just like hers. Congratulations to you and her again........Mike

Thanks. The rifle, being a Topper has a lower hammer spur allowing us to use as low as medium rings instead of extra high like the handis call for. We ended up running highs to keep us from getting crick in our necks.

since we can run a lower ring i put this simmons whitetail hunter in 1.5-5x24 (maybe 20?) on it to keep with that low profile look. She actually shot the deer at a 1.5x setting on the scope, something these old eyes prefer not to do.

The rifle had a straght wood stock that was less than perfect. I swapped it for a PG youth pardner stock first. I still preferred the look of the straight grip so when i found a little 410 with this stock in a pawn shop for a song i brought it home and swapped the stocks out then sold the 410. Its set up right now and the only thing i may later add is a brighter scope. It gets the job done. Just isnt as bright as my nikons

very good choice for a deer hunt-the 30/30 may be overlooked by a lot of hunters,but these old cartridges do what they've always done-put meat on the table.I get such a kick out of some armchair magazine reading hunters who talk about ''short range'' limitations when by far most deer are killed at ranges well within the capabilities of the rifle-which is generally far more than the people shooting them....

I agree. My longest shot ever on a deer was about 65 yards. That left me plenty of room to spare with the 30-30's capabilities. Why beat yourself to death with a magnum when its not needed

for years my friend used a 30/30 and put many a deer on the deck-but one day he decided to get a 7mm magnum and much to his surprise-when he shot a nice muly-it RAN on him-ran a long way,too.When he skinned it -he found that the bullet whistled right through and hardly expanded-the old 30/30 with its soft nosed bullet moving at moderate velocity killed SMALLER DEER much faster.Nothing against the 7 mm mag-it worked just fine -on MOOSE,but when he's hunting coastal blacktails in heavy cover-he packs his old 30/30

I too have a 7mag. Havent used it In years. Its a long range gun but i dont need a long range gUn where i hunt. If i ever make it out west it will tag along but until then it will probably be a range gun only. :-/ shame too i love shootin it

Great story and great picture. I think my best day hunting is when my son got his first deer. Tried to tell him about buck fever but he did not listen. He was shacking and sweating and I think he even stopped breathing for a minute or two.

The Topper 30-30 cant be beat for a youth rifle in my book. What load did she end up using?

Hey steve
We went with factory managed recoil Remington Core Lokts. Groups to about .5" at 50. Thats what she practices at for now. We'll move that back after this year a little bit

I almost bought Roman the same ammo. Almost as in was going to, but couldn't find any on the way to the ranch $:-\$

By the time that I got the new scope mounted, I didn't have time to reload. And I didn't have enough of my hand loads to re-sight in. So I picked up a box of Lever Revolutions. I sighted it in and he was so excited that he didn't even notice the difference in recoil between those and my 125gr reloads.

Thats awesome. I tried to tell my daughter that she wouldnt notice and that her first shot should be at a deer. She didnt believe me and wouldnt shoot the first deer we saw. Lol.
