Just want to add a little more information to this discussion.  I happened to notice this thread when I was trying to research the price of a Versa Pack 22 barrel.

In this WTS ad from the classifieds, Hunter 6657 was selling a VP 17HMR/20Ga factory combo.  I don't believe that H&R would have manufactured a different receiver for the .22VP combo, and the 17HMR combo.

This I believe validates my contention that a VP receiver is basically an SB1 receiver, and therefore able to handle pressures of barrels which an SB1 normally would be able to handle.  Specifically the shotgun barrels and the pistol caliber barrels, which IG is asking about: .357 and .44 Mag. barrels.

The 17hmr-20ga combo came as a three barrel combo with a centerfire rifle barrel on an SB2 frame, there was a very limited number of them made, 750 was the target quota as stated by Gardner, whether they ever reached it no one knows, doesn't seem like it from the few that have shown up here.

quick,

I also found this thread regarding a Versa Pack .17HMR and 20Ga combo, please see reply #5 from Hunter6657.  It specifically states "VERSA_PACK", and was not part of a 3 barrel combo.

Yeah, when I read his ad, I missed the part about when he bought it in 2002, IIRC (which doesn't always happen ::)), that was the year of introduction for the 17hmr round, CRS strikes again!  :-[
