Scoping a #1 Question

I bought a used stainless/laminated Ruger #1 in .45-70 today. It didn't come with rings. I want to mount a 2-7X32 Nikon on it for now. Money is tight. Whats the best way to go? I'd like some low matte blued rings.

Watch out for the Ruger 77 rings because I believe one is shorter than the other.  I bought these for my number 1 a while back and they will not work on the #1 because of the different heights.  I decided to order another set of the same so I could pick between the two heights and because 30 mm were hard to find. 


I agree, used is the way to go.  I am getting ready to start trimming my extra stock of scopes, mounts, and rings.  May have some in the classifieds soon, but still sorting though what I want to keep.  (They won't be low mounts though, all mine are medium).

Ruger packages the rings individually so you can buy two of same size for the #1 and mini-14, or two different size for the 77 and I think one of the revolvers.

If I were you I would get a set of medium rings. A No1 does not have very much room. With low ring sets you would be better served with a straight scope tube with no bell at all.

Here is mine with Leupold Ruger low rings.
Scope is VX-II 2-7x28. End bell is almost even with the rib.
Scope if just forward enough that the transition section is actually sitting between the screw heads of the rear sight.
That is where I had it with medium rings; eye relief in fine at 2x, gotta crawl a little at 7x, but it looks good.

Correction: The rings in the pic above are actually Ruger rings, not Leupold.
Last year I bought one set of Ruger low rings and one set of Leupold ruger low rings.

The rings in the pic above are Ruger (0.30" from rib to bottom of scope) on my 1-RSI.
The rings I put on my other one , a #1-V , were the Leupold (0.34" from the rib to the bottom of the scope).
The 1-V has a VX-II 6-18x 40 AO, and I intended to put use the shorter ones on the smaller scope with the RSI, but just when I got them and mic'ed them, found it it worked better the way I have it.

So, Swampman, if you ordered the Leupolds, your scope will sit 0.04" (1mm) higher than mine.

Also the Leupolds have one torx screw per side, where the rugers have 2.

I actually have both Ruger and Leupold low rings I just have to decide which ones to use.

My #1 4570 is set up with a vx3 1.5x5. A good straight tubed scope like that one or even a 1x4 vx2 is about ideal on them. Plenty of magnification for any range a guy is going to shoot a 4570 and low enough to be fast up close. Another good thing is a straight tubed scope gives more latitude in mounting and getting it back far enough. Rugers can be borderline in that respect. Every #1 ive ever had has wore a leupold of some kind because they are a bit more generous with eye relief. there also tough when it comes to recoil. I had a 458 #1 for years and it ate many many extream loads and wore a varixII 1x4 and it never gave me a bit of trouble. Plus i think the straight tubed scopes look just right on a #1 with an alexander henry scrabel style forend. Makes for a classic looking setup.

The 2-7X32 Nikon Prostaff fit perfectly in the Ruger low rings.  I want to make sure this rifle is accurate before I spend more money on a scope.  The Nikon Prostaff is one of the very few scopes that will stand up to the .500S&W Handi Rifle so it should do fine for awhile.  It has lots of eye relief because it's a shotgun scope.  A fellow on the Ruger Forum uses the Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5X32 on all his heavy hitters with no problems.  If it shoots well, I'll likely buy a Leupold for it.  I agree the 20mm scopes look the best.

I put a 2.5x scout scope on mine.  I used leupi extension rings and a sims recol pad in order to get the 9" of eye releif needed.  Handles like a shotgun!

the prostaffs will hold up well. Ill give them that and there ajustments track well but there not real great low light scopes especially the 2x7 and the 2x7 prostaffs i have dont seem to have much field of view compared to other 2x7s. I wouldnt waste another dollar on banner 1.5x4.5s I had two of them and though they were great when i first got them but both had lenses that fell out. They replaced the first one and when it happen to the second one i sent it in got a replacement and dumped both of them. they did have really good optics for that price range though. If your wanting a cheaper low powered scope look at the weaver 1x3. Its a great little scope. Good optics, good ajustments and mine has held up for years on a tc contendor carbine in 4570 and that little bugger kicks!
