30-30 barrel
« on: January 07, 2012, 08:48:03 AM »
Called H&R yesterday about my barrel and they say I should see it next week, mailed it off on 12/12/2011 not bad turnaround, may even have time to sight it in and hunt with it.
Have any of y'all tried any hornady 165 psp? I have a pretty good supply but I was worried about expansion.

I would just stay on the upper end (proceed with caution, watching for signs of pressure) of the load book's recommendations for your particular powder using the 170gr load data. Remember that those bullets have been used on game at long distances where their velocity is closer to 30-30 velocities within 100yds or so.

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks Dinny, any of the shots that I may have will be under 100 yrds., more like around 50 or so, where I hunt in the swamp there are very littel places that a shot will be over 50 or 60 yrd. I had said I was going to dedicate this years hunting to my 1894 44 mag. but getting a new gun/barrel I just gota break it in right, just cant stand it. ;D

Hornady's answer to me on the 180 gr. version and I believe Jimbo48 checked the same info on the 165, was that the bullet needed to be doing 1600fps at the point of impact.  So as long as you are doing 1600 at 100 yards in your case, should be plenty.  With a really nice low kicking load of Reloader7 I am using these in 7.5x55 Schmidt-Rubin out to 300 yards with good expansion.  It still maintains 1000 foot pounds of energy to over 500 yards, so I can still shoot goats at the silhouette range also.  It's no where near a max load, so in the 30-30, the 1600 shouldn't be hard to get at 100 yards.
