my mod 70
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:57:41 AM »
aint got no collector value to it whatsoever

got from a friends B.I.L. in the summer of 98
he won it in a shriners auction in bangor maine
got it new in box for 450 dollars
mod 70 classic sporter crf ot6 new haven gun
2nd yr production run right before winchester had david miller look at redesign the stock
particully issues with opening and narrowing the grip area from what i read
never seemed like a problem, to me it is comfortable
put lupy mounts and a lupy vx 2  2x7 on it
played around with all different types of factory ammo with it
spent that summer shooting
probably shot upwards of 250 rounds thru it
playing around
seeing what shot the best out of it

cut a 100 yard shooting lane out to our camp made a real nice shooting bench
spent alot of spare time that summer at that bench
just shooting

it liked the 165 gr failsafes from winchester the best
would shoot 3/4 ths inch groups

had a problem with groups stating to string straight up and down at one point

took the action and barrel apart
seen what appeeared to be a wedge shaped peice of wood crack where the front sling swivel installed by the factory had put pressure on it and allowed it to wedge the barrel upwards with pressure while shooting

i floated the barrel redid the stock with tru oil and the problem disappeared
at times with that friction adjustment scope my zero would wander say a half an inch to an inch at times between shooting sessions
i made do with it till i could get another
shot a 10 pt in 2000 with the gun at 25 yards in heavy tracking snow dressed out at 205
gross scored 156 and 7/8ths
net scored 155 dead even

then we came back down to ft campbell in 2001
i sold the scope to a 1st leiutenant in my company told him the scope has a tiny drift problem and that he could send it back to lupy to check out
which he did
they fixed it supposedly
he was happy with the scope
well winchester had done something to coating on its failsafe bullets prior to me selling off thescope
i actually called oiln talked to their tech guys and they said they did change the coating formula
i noticed when my groups started to open up and i noticed shavings of black coating on the necks of the bullets from their seating process

well then i sold that scope
got a lupy vx3 2.5 -8 x36 for it
did a trigger job on it
basically cut 3/4ths of a coil off the trigger spring with a dremel
got the pull down to 14 oz breaks like glass
crisp no creep
just crisp glass break trigger
passed bounce and slam bolt test
i then aluminum pillar bedded and glass bedded the front and rear recoil bolts and areas and the floor plate bolt
area
glass bedded the lenght receiver very slightly on both sides
stress releived the magizine box with the dremel from the bottom of the receiver
bedded the 1st 3/4ths inch of the barrel
and once again redid the stock with tru oil
i also bought a dembart checkering outline tool and opened up the outline for checkering slightly
(better overall grip)
put it all back together
started shooting the 165 grain hornady light mags
they shot pretty good during my playing back home in maine
they was around 1 inchers all day long up their in 9the summer of 98
i was surprised to see them group under 5/8ths after all this work!!!!!
really happy actually
then hornady came out with the same grain in the sst round
they stayed right around 5/8ths still for groups
then 2 years agao they changed the name to super perfomance
in the same load with the 165 sst
they dropped the fps about 50fps from 3015 to 2965 ish
and this load in my rifle is a 1/2 to 5/8ths inch load all day long!!!!!!!!!
it is a clover leaf one holer rifle 5 shot gun
best group i ever shot with the gun if i can do my part was just over 3/8ths center to center
i get them here in town (clarksville tn) for a little over 26 a box at midsouth shooters supply about 3 miles down the road from where i live

then last year i got a wild hair up my butt and sanded off the cheek peice completely
took a heck of a long time with sandpaper started corse then went fine
maintained contour
cant tell the rifle ever had a cheekpeice at all
and once again redid the stock
and it actually feels better on the comb of the rifle minus the cheek peice

call me crazy
collector value be darned
i got 3 daughters
19,17 and 12

maybe one day in the future i will have a grandson that i can teach to shoot and hunt
and he can have the rifle when the time comes ......

this is an older picture of it
when i redid the stock this time i thinned out the checkering tru oil 5050 with mineral spirts
and did the checkering 1st then cover it up with light release tape while doing the rest of the stock
blended and sanded with 4ot steel wool
thank god zip strip works and i did not have to do any sanding off of the old finish which would have hammered the level of the checkering for sure

anyways collector value be darned
a grandson one day well hopefully get this gun down the line

this is the buck
have shot many with the rifle but i wont get another mounted till i get another equal to or better than this one

Are you comfortable hunting with a 12 oz trigger?  Do you ever have to wear gloves?  With an empty rifle, move your safety to the safe possition and pull the trigger very hard.  Move the safety to the fire position to see if it fires.  This was a problem I had with two Mod 70 rifles.  Easy to make them unsafe.  In both cases I created the unsafe problem.

safety works as it should in all 3 positions
as it should from the factory
all the cutting of 3/4ths of a coil did was to lighten up spring pressure
i could have bought an aftermarket spring also that would have accomplished the same outcome
but then i would have had to adjust the screws on the trigger to get the setting of it back correct
doing the way i did maintained the factory setting of the screws and only lightened the squeeze
im very comfortable with the trigger
i hunt in tn
wear glomits when it is cold
so the trigger sensitivity thing with cold a cold finger is not an issue to me

I have a Model 70 in 325WSM , i love this gun. Made a 284 yard neck shot on a whitetail this season through the trees from one ridgetop to the next on my hunting club.....deer didnt even twitch, dropped in his tracks. I have a 6-18 x 50 Shooters edge scope on it also. Love the scope...inexpensive and works really well.  im zeroed at 250 yards with the gun and held at the top of the deers neck....hit it dead in the spine....one shot one kill. Really happy I own a lot of rifles..mossberg, stevens, browning, remington and winchester.....have to say i like my Model 70 the best.
