My Ruger Bug Out Kit

Put together this quick grab and run kit today, works pretty good. On my trusty bathroom scale it weighs 22 pounds fully loaded. Take a look.
 
Front pockets hold three 25 round mags and my holstered SR22P


Inside big pocket holds the scoped rifle, the two smaller pockets the barrel and two tubes of ammo.


I found these 2"X18" plastic tubes online. They hold about 800 rounds each. If you don't scope the rifle you can use the big pocket to hold three tubes of ammo.

Pretty nice set-up.  Were it me, my bugout pistol would be a .45 ACP and the 10-22 as a food getter would have one tube of ammo with the other being for the pistol.  I love .22's, but would want a centerfire for direct defense.    Just my 2cp though.

  Very interesting.  And yet, I feel that 22 pounds is just way too heavy, to devote to a .22 battery.  I would rather have one lightweight .45 auto with 100 rounds, the .22 rifle with 500 rounds, and the rest of the weight in food.
 The .22 pistol is just woefully insufficient as a man stopper (which is what a hand gun is suppose to do.)  How much energy does it deliver at the muzzle?  About 150 foot pounds?   And, one out of every 3 adult males in the U.S. is now medically obese, commonly topping 250 pounds?  And likely wearing a heavy belt and coat?  I honestly belive that the .22 handgun may get you killed.
   If a .45 is too heavy, then go with a stainless  J-Frame Smith & Wesson Airframe, in .38 P+, 3 inch barrel, with a high quality self defense round.

GUYs, I have the heavy stuff covered also    My get out of town plan include a group of folks to share the loads. And hopefully I will be able to use a form of motorized transportation to assist in the escape.

Nice setup.  Was the HiPoint hard to find?  (they're not exactly common    )   
 
BTW, is that 40 cal?  (regardless, a 9mm or .40 HiPoint carb
would make a great lightweight and concealable 'system')!
 
Too bad HiPoint doesn't offer 10mm. 
 
ADDED:  How well do the new Ruger (extended) 10/22 mags work?  Are you happy/confident in them?  (I am familiar with Butler Creek HotLips and SteelLips mags).  THANKS!

Cougar, it not a Hi Point. It is a Kel Tec Sub 2000 and a Glock 17  Both 9MMs and both use the same mags.
 
The Ruger mags are by far superior to any of the aftermarket mag. I have never had one jam or fail to feed. Another plus is you can take them apart and clean them.
 
Butler creeks were great when that was all that was available, now all mine are in the back of the safe and never get used.  I will wait for the next Obama scare and dump them

Don't underestimate the power of a 22 LR. or a Ruger 1022. Down here most of the gator hunters use a 22LR. 1 shot in the right spot and its fried gator for supper! the 1022 is very accurate and a friend of mine is a manager for a large tract of land and that is what he has in his truck to take out coyotes. they prey on the cows when they gave birth.  I have seen him make 100 yd+ shots with his 1022 and it sports only a cheap bushnell or tasco 3x9 scope.  in a bug out situation any gun is better than no gun. and a very accurate 22 rifle with plenty of ammo can be dangerous and/or a very effective game gitter in the right hands.
 
Just think how much a human's "combat effectivness" will be reduced with only a small wound to any exposed body part. Hell I  broke my pinky toe and I could barely walk much less run anywhere for about 4 weeks and then every step was painfull. If you don't believe me, go to the range shoot your favorite rifle for a control "group" (pun intended). then smash any finger on your trigger hand. then shoot another group. Your accuracy will go to crap quickly! (  don't ask me how I know this to be true... and yes my thumb nail was black for a few weeks! And yes, I traded the M1 garand for a M14 soon after that!)    .  my point being that yes a 223,  308, 3006, 12 ga etc.. would be a better defense rifle. in a real defense situation I'd prefer close air and arty support!   but You gotta dance with the girl you brought to the party!

Gator shooter- you are partly correct. In combabt if the two sides are far enough appart a man with any kind of wound pulls back and tries to ket it attended to- which is why AAA and No 4 buck proved so much more effective at home protection from comunist gurrilas than larger shot sizes- you just needed a hit- any hit to put one enemy out of action.
 
Once the ranges get close- to the point where a wouned opponent cannot pull back the fight goes on until you incapacitate him (or he gets you)- and that is where the .22 is a little underpowered. With a decent rangefinder and a scope where you can quickly adjust the range, the .22 is capable of inflicting 'effective' fire out to 4-500m. It is when the doped up gook surprise3s you in the loo at 3am that you sudenly require a bit more.
 
I dislike the .22LR as a survival round because I know how short the shelf life is if it gets hot- .22 MAG is SOOOO much better. :22 Mag from a handgun is the minimum and if you live in a cold climate you need something more- I have seen .38 S&W fail to penetrate a wet greatcoat. I would say for a cold wather environment where people wear multiple layers then a .32 mag or .38 SPL +p is minimum. 
 
Equally there is little point in being 'over gunned'. If the bad guy (s9 are doped up, then only hits to vital organs work- Seen a guy (in Somalia) keep moving forward after a fairly center chest hit from a .50 BMG...sure he bled out quickly but if he had been a better shot he might have hit some of the blue caps he was shooting at (he got to within 25m).
 
The final thought is that with any semi auto with a big mag, you automatically go through more ammo than you planned. You take a snap shot at a target- but you always fire a double tap... You fire and don't see the strike or any result so you fire again...Picked up after a fire fight where two of the defenders had .303 bolt actions and two had FAL semi auto's. In a 30 minute attack by 50 gooks, the guys with the 303's each fired about 30 rounds- the guys with the semi auto's had got through over 200 each (and only one gook was hit!) - true it was at night and the farm security fence stopped the bad guys closing in and in the end they gave up, but if you were carrying all the ammo...600 rounds is good for 20 fire fights if you have a bolt action or 3 if you use a semi auto with pre filled mags....

When and if TSHTF I truely think 90% of the population don't stand a chance against anything that lasts more than a few weeks. Individual survival will be almost impossible near any major populated areas. Groups are going to be the only answer to make it through. I hope I am near my group if it ever happens.

I bought the scope twenty years ago to put on a SKS. Never got around to mounting it. I originally put a full size scope on the Ruger but then it wouldn't fit the case anymore. It was a lightbulb moment when I remembered this compact scope in my gun safe. Not sure the manufactures name, was made in China.
