I have seen them in an Encore barrel, so i don't know why not. The trick would be getting the heavily rebated rim to extract.

The only way you'll get one is an expensive rebore or stub, and then you'll only have the equivilent of a trapdoor 45-70, 300gr @ 1900fps. Dunno about the rebated rim being a problem, my 300WSM worked fine as does the 284 Win for others but they didn't have as much rebate on the rim.

The 458 Socom is basically a 45-70 made to operate on an AR platform.

About two years ago I had the same idea. The discussion can be found by searching and narrowing by my name. End result was that it could be done, but not using the existing brass. Gendoc and Tim were, as usual, spot-on. Why have a Socom built when the 45-70 will do the job just as well if not better? For the sakes of Indiana deer hunting, the 45-70 case can be trimmed to legal length and still do a fine job. ;)

Hello. I am new to the forum. I am from Indiana and read a post about trimming a 45-70 case to Indiana legal case length of 1.8 in. Can that be fired from a normal 45-70 barrel or is this for a modified barrel?

Standard barrel.  Just a little more chamber than cartridge.  Like shooting 44 special out of a 44 magnum chamber.  You may foul it a bit if you shoot it a bunch (like when you go to sight it in)
