25-06 and the 270 seem to be the best, no need for any magnums as far as I'm concerned.

Measure three times cut twice.

From the cartridges that you have listed, I'm guessing that you have a contender, so my suggestions are based on that. For standard chamberings, my first choice will always be 7-30 Waters. It is a great round and out of a pistol will take you to 200 yards. 2nd, 30-30 if you are handloading and put light spirepoint bullets in it. As for wildcats, there are a ton of great long range rounds such as the JDJ family as well as the ones just about every other custom shop offers. The 309 JDJ is an excellent round that I have only shot and not loaded for, but I've heard that forming the shoulders can be a bit tricky.

Pick a good bullet, velocity kills not caliber or the case that fired the bullet

some like small bullets high velocity

some like big bullets low velocity and some like big bullets and High velocity.

I prefer minimal recoil with a good bullet. (ie small bullets high velocity)

Hi Hal,
The 300 Whisper is out of the ?, as it is a specialized "short range controll round". In the Contender, the 7-30 Waters would be hard to beat. I see you mentioned a 24" barrel, so I assume it will be custom. Then I would maybe consider an Improved version of the Waters. But I don't know that there would be that much advantage of an Imp. in a Contender. Although I'm sure there would be, some gain in velocity.
