One more for the .41 mag....just having a hard time figuring which bullet to use.  First year out it was 175gr Silvertips and that one worked on a coyote.  Next up was 250gr Cast Performance reloads, but when a shot offered itself I used Gold Dots out of my Marlin.  That bullet punched through the lungs and broke the off side ribs, then I believe it fell back into the body cavity.  Unfortunately I didn't realize it hadn't passed through until I was back home and missed a chance to retrieve that bullet.

This year it was 200gr Speer 3/4 jackets at 1330fps from my M657.  Doe was around 40 yards, horrible shot that wound up passing through the intestines.  From behind the near ribcage, through the paunch and into the hind leg, it tore through the upper leg bone and left shards of it scattered through the exit hole.  Some hollowpoint, looks like it penetrates better than it looks to.  I spent a lot of time practicing with forearms supported, and when the shot offered itself I was reclined with my hands locked between my knees.  Shot was very steady, but result was impact a good 6" left of aim point.

Late season, I hope to get a chance with a 170gr Sierra.  Really need to hit the heart/lung area this time.

nilescoyote, in your answer the ruger bisley .357 is the only revolver, so I guess that's your choice?

TIME TO REVISE THIS OLD TOPIC.

I love to hunt deer!  It is only March and I am already getting the itch.

I posted to this topic in 2006:

"My currnet favorite is a 41 mag S&W PC light hunter under a Burris 4x.
I have a S&W 657 mountian gun (unscoped) for the closer shots, I often hunt with both guns at once."

Well things have changed here in Indiana since then and I have taken deer with:

357, handgun and rifle
41 mag, handgun and rifle
44 mag, handgun and rifle
45 colt, rifle
Muzzle loader, 50 cal (44 cal with sabot), handgun and rifle. 458 socom, rifle
25-06, handgun

Well this year I will be shooting the 358 Hoosier, new wildcat round meeting the newest hunting regs.  I can't wait to say to the wife:  "Honey I'm going out to shoot a few Hoosiers I will be back before dinner."

What caliber do you take your deer with.   It is as much fun to get ready (load development, etc.) as the hunt.

I hunt whitetails with my Ruger FT BH .44 Special.

And as far as deer are concerned, all I've done is hunt with it.   8)

For DEER I use the .44 mag revolver or a 7MM handgun(TC or bolt). I also have used the .308, .35 Rem, 358JDJ,.30-30 and 6.5JDJ. I took my .45-70 Tc out for deer a couple times, but recoil is becoming a problem. I have to say that caliber is NOT as important as accuracy when shooting  live targets. So now my 6.5JDJ and .308 seem to be in my hand more often when after deer.

Contender in 10" 357 Herrett or 14" 7-30 Waters.  If I ever go rifle it will be my 1898 30-40 Krag sporter with peep sight at the same distances I hunt with my scoped Contenders.

Thanks.  It's one of those that periodically I have to take out of the safe just to admire and fondle even if I'm not going to shoot it.  Pencil markings inside the stock revealed that it was sporterized in 1966.  Whoever performed the work did an excellent job.
