Can a Henry mini bolt be reamed to 22 Mag?
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:27:08 AM »
Saw a Henry mini-bolt at the last gun show, picked it up and handled it and thought Wow what a great truck gun.  I have a small truck, only draw back is I dont want a 22 lr.  Would that rifle take a good reaming to say 22 Mag or even .223? In 22 Mag I would not hesitate to plunk down money! Any feed back would be appreciated!

This thread fits better here than on the rimfire board.

This isn't really a serious question is it?

If I understand your question right, you want to rechanber a rifle already chambered in.22 LR, to .22 WRFM. That wouldn't be a very bright idea.

As for chambering that same rifle to .223, that is beyond the pale  of absurdity...!

Personally for myself, if some one handed me a Henry rifle, I would be insulted.

Can it be done? Prolly but just because something can be done does NOT mean it should be done. Way too many problems to just rechamber a small rifle of this type to a higher pressure and larger round.

Case head is larger, case is longer, it operates at much higher pressures, bullet diameter is larger.

As stated to even think of trying to turn such a rimfire into a centerfire is just something ridiculous to consider. Never ever attempt such a conversion. Dangerous to you and those around you when it comes apart and it would come apart.

I am kind of thinking that a 22 Mag runs only slightly higher pressure than a 22 LR if any at all, in fact the SAAMI pressure on both is 24,000psi.  I've done a Rossi 22lr to 22 Mag and it went fine.  Only issue I would see is if the action travel is long enough to chamber and eject a 22 Mag round.  Larry

Just spring for the Accubolt in 22 mag (H007M). It isn'n materially bigger than the mini bolt, and is ready to go in 22 mag.

Geeee, Why didn't Henry think of that  ?

Anyone with the hotz for a miniature .22 Mag boltgun, can simply buy a .22 Mag Crickett - $140, done.

I might be wrong but, IIRC, the bore dia is a couple of thousands different in the 22LR and 22Mag in most guns, I don't remember which is the largest. This may create a accuracy problem with one of them.   In the Gun Digest it has both the 22LR and the 22Mag listed at 26,000 pressure,   both are the same, according to GD.
The 223 is a lot higher operating pressure at over 42,000,,,,,Very bad idea just as some have said previously, definately to much for a 22 rim fire bbl.

Didn't know the Cricket Mag existed. My first thought was a Handi Sportster in .22 Mag. no conversion, no drama, almost guaranteed excellent accuracy. I got a youth stocked Sportster and a T/C Hotshot for the grandkids last Christmas. The Sportster handles great, even with the youth stock and shoots even better.  I have a tough time shooting the HotShot, it's truly sized down for the little ones. I wonder if the Cricket or the Henry would be the same?

The Crickett is truly a 'munchkin' rifle.  Very light and handy - easy to 'one hand' it too.

The Chipmunk, The Crickett, and the little T/C are all about the same Munchkin size/weight.

They make a great camping/truck .22 - but to effectively fire the Chipmunk I bought 20 years ago for my Grandson, I had to cheek it, ILO shouldering it.
It's a good thing that a .22 has no recoil to speak of.  :D
