Had time to take it apart. The barrel is .50 cal. GR. Douglas

The bore looks good, needs a good scrubbing. I do know for myself that these barrels were very good shooter's in their day. From what I researched, some idiot tried to use smokeless in one of these barrels and of course it blew up and then sued the company. Hence, the company is still in business, just not making BP barrels anymore.
Since the gun has no place for a ram rod, and with the lyman type sites on the barrel/tang; I would definately tell my friend that his find is a  bench target shooter at places like Friendship, Indiana.
I'll go on an clean it up, probably brown the barrel/get the brass back up/check the bolster/re-finish the stock, ect. With some work, I might just be able to get this thing going again. The barrel is 41 inches.
