« on: January 26, 2004, 05:54:41 PM »
what loads are you 30-30 shooters useing in your rifles?i have allways used round nosed bullets in my 30-30 but i am thinking about working up a load with nosler bt or maybe useing the ssts.thinking about staying down around 125 or 130gr.i always heard one should stay 150gr or less with the spitzer bullets with the 30-30.what do you single shot shooters think?how are these 125 and 130 gr bullets peforming on deer size game?what kind of speed are you getting?

You can use spitzer types in the .30-30 lever gun but you will have to single load them into the chamber.  That bullet point up next to the primer in the magazine tube could make things exciting.   The disclaimer done, I do load 125 grain Remington Core lokt in the .30-30 as well as the single shot pistol bullets for my Contender and have tried them in my Winchester 94 to see how they'd do.  While I have not, others have loaded the 168 grain match grade hollow point round to play with long range targets.   The lighter bullet shoot flatter and are adequate for whitetail deer.  I didn't chronograph any loads but my data suggests the 2400-2500fps range from 20 inch barrels.

I use 120 BT in a 7-30 and it really performs excellently on mule deer, so a 120 or 130 in 30-30 caliber should do just as well.
