A 26" barreled classic - the Savage 219 rifle.

(The scope is a Revelation, to me. ;) )

Very cool, I have an old Springfield/Stevens single 16 ga. that has very similar looking wood.  Pretty neat with the old scope too.  ;)

I love the .22 Hornet. Such a great calibre to use to introduce young shooters to center-fire rifles and it can be so accurate. I have a Ruger M77/.22 Hornet. It is such a great gun to take out and hunt small game and varmints. The rifle is quiet with little to no recoil, and when hunting small woodlots and small farm-steads its the perfect varmint rifle.

Very cool find that you have there, Rangr44.  8)

Thanks for all the kind words, folks - I'm especially fond of the mild-mannered Hornet, since my state is very densely populated, and most of the .22 CF's (even a .223) makes enough noise to draw complaints and/or revokation of hunting/trespass permission.

Brings back memories for sure.  Fifteen years old in 1965 I bought a used one for 20 bucks and then bought a CH press, Lyman dies, and Lyman 55 measure for 35 more.   A Herters scale for 3 bucks topped it off and put me in business.  It was my first centerfire and adventure into reloading.  Accounted for lots of West Texas Jackrabbits.  Wish I had it back for nostalgia sake....can't believe two of you found one the same day and in such nice shape.

Watch your forend pressure when sighting in.  Best I remember a little too much this way or that made it do crazy things.

And have fun!!!! :)

with some old Winchester HPs I was getting three shots in about an 1 1/2" at alittle over 100 yds.  I had mounted an old Weaver K4 on it.  Was trying to get an idea if it showed promise.  It does.  Have about six different handloads I want to try when I get the time.

I have I picked some years back that has been converted to a K Hornet, accurate as I long as I use 40 gr. bullets or lighter, the 1 in 16" twist won't stabalize any heavier bullets.  Really do like the little rifle and it goes with my 219 30-30.

Not allowed in Wisconsin, but would like to try it where legal.  I agree that the Hornet would be ideal.

I have considered converting mine to a K-Hornet..the barrel on my rifle tends to heat up fast and the shots start wondering..very accurate for the first 3 shots.

  A great rifle, beautiful picture.

  But, a word of caution.

Never ever dry fire it.  The firing pins on these break really really easily.  And never close the action while your finger is on the trigger.  (The fire pin will be protruding and the action will snap it off.)

New firing pins are fairly easy to get, but replacing the firing pin is an absolute nightmare.  I've heard of experienced gunsmiths needing 2 hours to get the thing apart and back together again.  (That's why gunsmiths won't fix them.  Their bill for two hours of labor would be more than half the value of the rifle.)

Go on the internet now, and buy a spare firing pin.  People who own and shoot this rifle swear that sooner or later, you're gonna need it.

Best, Mannyrock
