loads for Contender
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:33:35 AM »
I have  280 grain lfngc Hardcast from DRYCREEK loaded with 21.9 grains  of H110. for my SRH .,44,  Are these ok to shoot in a 14 inch Contender  .44?   Didn't have the Contender when I loaded them.

That SOUNDS like a max load. I'd call the powder maker and ask them what is the top load for that bullet. Is it a Linotype slug or a softer alloy? that will change pressures some. BUT I am thinking about JACKETED bullets. IF there is ANY doubt about their use, pull them down and reload with a known SAFE load!

If it were me I'd load up some more of that bullet and powder combination in .5 grain increments (5 rounds each should do) starting at 20 or 20.5 grains and shoot them in your Contender, starting with the lightest and working up to the max loads watching for pressure signs.  That is AFTER I have double checked my load data.  That is what I would do.  I cannot advise you as I'm no expert and assume no responsibility.

Me, I'd pull those bullets and remove 2 grs of powder from the load.  There is no need for shooting max or past max loads in any gun.  According to the Hodgdon manual, you're playing with fire.

Thanks for the replies.  I got these loads from the dealer I bought the bullets from, and they are hot, but not max  loads.   And I do wish now I had loaded them a little lighter.
