I'm now in the club
« on: June 17, 2011, 12:30:24 PM »
A few years ago I met one of our members and we went to the range.  He let me shoot his Henry and I loved the little lever action.
Smooth and buttery and in 22LR a blast to shoot.  It went on the list guns to get.
Well today while poking around the local shop at lunch time I saw one on the shelf and the price was fair so I get to pick it up in less than two weeks.
Is there a secret hand shake or sign?

I think its the next one on my list, too.
H001?
gonna leave it open sights?
gonna get a cowboy hat, or at least a red bandana?
I want an H001 and one of those horse-head-on-a-stick things.

Gotta play this when you shoot it:

You're a twisted man.  I like that.
Do you think I can get a scabbord for the stick with the horse head?
Some time you need two hands to ride.
A 92 with a broken sear would be neat for the rapid fire but you think after that many seasons the Rifleman would have taken his rifle to a gun smith and gotten the sear fixed.
Oh well, the little wrist flicker will be fun in the back yard with a bag of cowboy and indian or civil war army men and a box of the Aquilla bullets that shoot a pellet using the primer only.
And with full loads will be fun on the farm for tree rats and cotton tails.
I really think you have to leave the lever guns with open sights.  Yes it is an H001 with really nice wood.  Already have a few 22LR set up with scopes.

Everywhere you go will be piles of 22 brass. I use ATF on my boresnake. Dont take pictures of your boresnake and post them.

Cool large lever.
And no pictures of my bore snake.  I learned from that weirdo from NY that resigned Yesterday.

McWD - did you happen to look at a Henry pump while you were buying that H001? if so, what did you think?

Last week, I asked my kids to go look at an H001. It didn't juice them.
My grandfather left a Winchester mod 62 pump to my dad. it was stolen.
I'm leaning toward the Henry pump, since its the closest thing I have seen to a 62, but would like to hear an objective view.

No the shop only had the standard lever gun.  They may change their minds if you go get one and a box or two of CB Longs or the Aguilla humming birds (not sure how they shoot -YET) and set up some plinking targets in the back yard with a good back stop.
Quiet as the spring air Pellet rifles out of my other 22s of that size.  I pick up the rifle tomorrow so we will see.
Two weekends ago I got my nephew a Model 10 Daisy BB gun and some wild west army men.  He was all excited an had a great time sending Indians on the war path and cattle russlers across the sand box. ( he would miss a lot and I think the hits were accidental but he had a great time and his older sister that wanted nothing to do with guns wanted to shoot and now wants her own BB gun.)
I will keep and eye out for the Henry trombone gun.  But my guess is it as buttery smooth as the levers.

Think I will go try one at lunch. My kids are about grown, so I was interested to see if an H001 was a future "granddaddy's gun".

Picking it up today? wow. i was worried this thread was stale.
In Alabama, you can buy guns on your lunch hour and go shoot after work.
All you need is money, voting privileges,  a driver's license and a face to match it.

My father-in-law gave me a H001 a few years back.  I really like it.  Very smooth action and quite accurate.  I have been thinking about a pumper as well.

Fondled a pump today.
They did not have a trigger lock on it, so I could pump it and un-cock it.
Same basic parts as an H001T (oct barrel).
It might have come home with me except all they had was a 22 mag.

The only thing I did not like was that the forearm is designed to cover part of the receiver during the eject stroke, so there is a big hollow place in the forearm (looking down) when it is in the closed position. Gives the appearance of being kind of flimsy, even though it feels solid. The problem is that its competing with the memory of my grandad's Win 62. It had a solid circular forearm.
Tomorrow will take me by a Henry "gold" dealer, which is supposed to mean larger inventory.

Got a H001T and a box of shorts today.
I like the extra heft of the octagonal barrel.

Did the Chuck Connors thing in the basement into some phone books with some shorts. Need to practice.
Need the theme song playing in the background.

If I mount a scope on it, will the rings scratch up the receiver groove?

Cool.
When I got mine home I loaded some CB Longs and some Aguilla Supers in te rifle and sent them into the trap in the back yard.  Fun little gun. Can't wait to get it out on the range or on the farm for some hunting and serious plinking.
I now have top head to the website and see what the octagon barrel looks like.

Completes the 22 trifecta for me: 10/22, 452 American, Henry Lever; three different kinds of fun.
Or, is there a four-fecta? What am I missing?

This Henry seems to be the most social of all my guns.
A very approachable, girl-next-door kind of gun.
Not a Miss-America kind of gun, or an admire-from-a-distance kind of gun or a look-but-don't-touch-and-if-you-try-to-touch-now-you-are-subject-to-a-restraining-order kind of gun.

Scary I have a trifecta of 10/22's
Original model
Target model
and finally the full length stock.
I too have Cz 22's a Varmint and a Millitary trainer.
The last 22 I am thinking of is a full target model.  With the target sights of the circle in side of the circle that you put on the poker chip sized target at 50 feet.  While I would love an anshutz.  I was looking at the Stevens Mark II VST as the next rimfire and with an MSRP under $450, I think it is afordable.
I may have to get an octagon barrel Henry as well.  That thing looks good.  I would not stick a scope on it.  But I can see the sights.  Maybe in 5 years I'll change my mind.

Watched a couple of Roy Rogers movies on TCM last night, which caused me to put 400 through my H001T this morning.

Learned today that I shoot open sights better without my glasses.
Although the tennis ball I was shooting at seemed extra fuzzy, I hit it more often and farther away without them.
(Good to know; planning to start deer season in Nov with an open sight Ruger #1-RSI.)

Looks like the hammer has chipped the paint of the receiver from coming cocking it.
The H001 in the store was chipped, and I thought "i'm smarter than that", but apparently not.
A black Sharpie covers it well enough.

This will be my summer plinker; when the weather is so hot (i.e., normal), I don't get tight groups anyway.
Blazers are good enough for tennis balls, but CCI 0056 subsonics give the tightest groups.

This gun is fun to shoot.

I just picked up my third one today, a Long Rifle with the Oct. barrel.  I have one each of the regular round barreled ones, 22 LR and 22 Mag.  One of my buddies shot both last weekend and fell in love with em, wanted to buy the round barreled LR, so I guess it will be his now.  That one has had a few thousand rounds thru it with out any issues.  Looking foreward to trying the new one out soon.  The club sign is the grin on yer face after shootin the lil darlins. ;) ;D   DP

As good as the Henry leverguns are, I'm sorry to say that the Taurus Rossi Model 62 pump is better than the Henry pump - AND it's an almost direct copy of the Winchester.

I joined the Henry family about 4-5 months ago. I was looking for an H001T or a H001 so I was going to take either one in the best wood I came across. As it turned out, I found several at Sportsman's Warehouse and one of the H001's suited me. I bought it and ordered a big loop for it. Here it is ...

I also wrapped the big loop ...

I have really enjoyed this rifle. It was as smooth as hot August butter right from the box. I am leaving the sights original as it is plenty accurate for my needs.

I had that exact toy rifle when I was a kid...aahhh...good times!
