Job outsourced overseas - what would you do?
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:24:12 PM »
First of all , What this thread is not is a oh whoa is me, oh poor poor me post.
Crap happens. What this thread is - Is a what would you do if you were placed in the following situation?

My Job has been outsourced overseas, Layoffs coming any day now. This is a given .
There is a chance I could stay on a few more months if I would be willing to train my replacements.
I can't stop the outsourcing ,  but I'm thinking of telling them no thank you and sign me up for the first wave of layoffs.

From my perspective being "allowed to stay a few extra months" doesn't mean spit in the greater scheme of life. Whats a few extra months worth of pay when it come to my integrity and dignity.

I guess I am prejudice in a sense but asking me to document 25 years of experience and train overseas replacements who are going to take away American Jobs just so the company I work for can save a few bucks in labor costs doesn't sit well with me ?

What's your thoughts ? am I wrong ? what would you do?

I'd work as long as I could.  It's really tough out there.

If I could handle it financially, I would get my head right to walk out the door, then I would offer to stay and train my replacements at some multiple of my current rate of pay.

I would tell them where to get off if I could afford it.

I would vote for Ron Paul, the only GOP candidate that doesn't support the WTO, GATT, NAFTA and all the other new world order agenda and the only candidate that wants to pull our horns in and protect the citizens of the US and not consider the cooporate structure all there is to the American economy. ear

Stay on.....train 'em wrong! ;)

I was thinking the same. Except I would tell them I want more money to train. Then I would walk out before I was suppose to. But I am a grudge holder too ;)

It's easier to get a job if you have a job.  I would stay on and collect a pay check while I was looking for another job.  Many perspective employers see the unemployed as damaged goods.  Their thinking is "if this guy is worth a crap why doesn't he already have a job?"

If you leave early you will have fewer co-workers to compete with in your job hunt. If you end up moving for employment hurry and get your house sold before another hundred are on the local market.

Looking for a job while still employed would be another strategy to consider. I would put plenty of time and effort into it too. What could the current employer do fire you? Many will tell you it is easier to get a job from the position of being currently employed. You will not have the stench of desperation on you.

My generic advice would be to put your crap into a truck and drive to North Dakota, If you are a laborer type go west if tech is more your style go east. Cry about the cold if you want but they sell clothes. Like I told my co-workers in Il. there is an entire country north of Mn. how bad can it really be?

FI....I would walk, if you do it many others may follow. Then it would leave the company in a panic just like they are doing to you folks. They don't give 3 (censored word) about you, why should you give 3 (censored word) about them or there company. Best of luck out there to you.

You have to think of yourself in this situatuion and move on. Hanging around won't give you a new career or put you out in the mainstream to find one. Jobs are out there. I live in a small town and changed jobs within ten days of making the decision to. Think out of the box. Picture yourself doing something totally different than what you're leaving and you'll find work. Employers want resilience and perseverance so get out there and show them what you got.

Not necessarily, it's actually quite the opposite. Employers don't want their workers taken away so they refrain from doing so themselves. Unless you have a specialized field, you are going to be more successful by being in between jobs, than being employed.

That's not been my personal experience.  I have been contacted by "headhunters" while gainfully employed.  Business is business, the competition is the enemy.

If you're registered with a recruiter, I can imagine how that would happen. That doesn't mean you've been hired just because they contact you. If you give them your resume, they'll contact you but the end of the interview makes all the difference. My point is that good employers practice ethical behavior, otherwise they wouldn't be one.
