DIY rifle rear sight pusher design wanted
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:48:45 PM »
Does anyone have a design for a homemade sight pusher that will work on a Handi rifle or Marlin.

I already have punches, but they don't like me banging on my gun at the range.
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Don't know if it's an option for you, but Williams and others make sight pushers.  Some more and some less.  If it were me, I'd probably buy one.  If you want to make one, looks a lot like a c-clamp, so I'd say find a smaller c-clamp and modify to make it work.  If it were me, brass or aluminum would be better jaw choices than steel.  ;)

AFAIK, there are no substitutes for moving a dovetail sight that's mounted directly in a barrel dovetail, other than a driftpin/hammer.

Commercial sight pushing tools are all designed to bear against the flat side of a sight ramp to move the sight blade.

I use my mini-mill.  I put masking tape on the vise jaws, tighten the slide in the vise, put a stud (usually an appropriate size drill bit - mounted upside down) in the chuck/collet, and use it to push sight in/out.  You could probably use a drill press with a compound vise - if it is big enough to take the lateral stress (can be pretty heavy).
