What wrong with this pup
« on: November 08, 2003, 03:15:47 PM »
I brought home a pup last week that had apparently been abandoned on a rural Highway pretty much in the middle of nowhere. She appears to be a beagle who had been very neglected. All her ribs were showing along with her hip sockets and backbone. Half her hair was missing from what appeared to be a bad case of flea/tick infestation and what we call "red mange." After getting her home I weighed her, she appears to be around 5 weeks and weighed only one pound and two ounces. I fed her and shortly there after I noticed her dragging her bottom, a good indication of intestional worms. Some liquid wormer fixed this problem. A good flea bath along with a permethrin dip seems to have the skin problems under control, she still scratches but I suspect this is from the scabbing of the sores and bites. Her weight has almost tripled from regular feedings. Her hair is growing back well and seems to be making great progress. She is very active, still somewhat skittish and spends a good amount of time outside with her nose to the ground as she is constantly sniffing. I recently gave her her 5 in 1 "puppy" shots but recently she has started scratching at her ears and muzzle. She will whimper and whine while digging at her muzzle occasionaly scratching her head along side the couch, chair, or your leg while shaking her head side to side. I suspect ear mites. I examined her ears but have not seen the classic brown waxy build up. I plan on giving her mite drops as a precaution but am concerned as I might be missing something. Anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing her  head shaking and muzzle scratching??
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES

Always possible there is something foreign in there.  Seed, stick, mud, water, anything like that will cause the shaking.  Another thing you can do if it doesn't seem to get worse real quick is to buy an ear cleaning solution that disolves crap in the dogs ear.  I have a real wolly dog and this solution helps break up wax/hair clumps and lessen the behaviors you have described.

check her teeth. if she had that many problems, she could have an abscess or bad tooth. I am no vet though.

sarcoptic mange

:-) I guess, she has sacoptic mange. Give her a few drops of liquid IVOMEC (not IVOMEC+!) for about five days with some favorite fast eaten food. My dogs once cuaght it probably from a fox. My vet fixed it up by prescribing IVOMEC. It also helps to get rid of all round worms. Sarcoptic mange is caused by submicroscopic mites. IVOMEC kills them well alnogn with worms.

Mr. Frog - I know that pup has a rough history, however, it has a brighter future with you as a friend.  I don't know for sure what is causing the problems, however, I am sure you and your vet will figure it out and get the critter back on the right path.  I know that dogs that have been saved or rescued,  form a special bond with the person or family that took them in.  Please keep us informed as to your progress with your new friend. Thanks

I don't really know Frog123, but I think he's got the best new found dad a puppy could ever hope to have.  You are one hay of a hero pal, and right on the op of my list.  Mikey.

In my experience sometimes you won't notice the wax buildup so much but it gets to be like an inner ear infection would with us. I have recieved hounds from people before saying they wouldn't run . Dog would be blowing snot the ear mites would be so bad! Clear em up & they can breathe again.
