Rear sight and bullet impact
« on: February 02, 2012, 03:24:58 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone knows how far bullet impact moves in one compete revolution of windage in a premier sight. Maybe the answer is caliber related I don't know. My 454 plinking load is dead on, but my 4227 load shoots 1 1/2" to the left at 10 yards. Same boolit and grip seems to be the same. No flinching going on either.

I guess I could crank a half turn and let a few go, but maybe one of you know the answer according to hoyle.

Thank you...

Depends upon caliber and load, distance to target, and barrel length. Adjust by no more than 1/4 turn increments. A full revolution will be a lot. Ten yards is close, obviously, so the sight adjustment will also subsequently need to be checked at a further distance, like 25 yards. A perfect windage zero @ 25 will normally be adequate out to about 100 yards. It will be a bit off to the side @ 50, then return at about 75-80, due to the Coraolis effect.

Thanks Ken. I should have known the answer was like everything else. It depends. Thanks for the tip about sighting @25. I typically shot 800-1400 yards but haven't shot rifles in many years. The last time I did I took 2nd place in a 50BMG match and that's with working up a load only the day before.

Hand guns are another story. Just have my 5 1/2 454 and no real place to shoot now that's why 10 yards. Would love a 475 or 500 but a man has to know his financial limitations  :)
