My Reminton 700 .308 build
« on: October 27, 2011, 11:51:24 AM »
Thought I would post a pic of my latest project.

Started off life as a R700 sps tactical .308

Replaced the Hogue stock with an HS Precision.
Bedded the stock.
Tac Ops bolt knob.
Painted and baked the barrel and reciever with Gun Kote.
Painted the stock camo with Alumahyde II.

Topped it off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15 tactical (in name only) scope w/ Burris XTR rings.  Attached a Harris Benchrest notched, swivel bipod.

Sighted it in at the range.  It consistantly shoots 1/2" groups @ 100 yards w/ Federal GMM.
Going to take it out to the 650 yard range this weekend and see what I can do with it.

I cannot believe that anyone has not posted to this thread... ???

That looks to be an awesome firearm and looking at your post date, you've probably already been out to the 650 yard range. How did it go? Were you able to keep her under or at 3.25 inches at 650??

I have a Remington M700 Mil-spec and I just love its accuracy. I left the stainless steel barrel alone and the gun basically looks stock as I bought it. I have a Leupold Rings and Bases. And the Glass is a Swift 4.5 -12 X 44mm, with a mil-dot reticle. I reload for it, and it is just the most accurate rifle Out-of-the-Box that I have ever seen. Not just once, but on several occassions I have used it to zip Coyotes at ~700 Yards...I've never ever done that with any other firearm.

Yes it will hold just over 3" @ 650 actually :)  It's my favorite gun to date by far!

Don't know as I'd call it a build , but it is a nice rig all the same , Those 700s do shoot , especially in .308 !

The only thing that was not done as in a traditional build was I didn't change out the bbl.  But with it shooting .5 moa w/ factory Black Hills match before I modified it, there was no need to improve the bbl.  I've also installed a NightForce 20moa canted picatinny base so I now have elevation adjustments out to 1000 yards.

Nice rifle.  I have an SPS Tac that averages .5 MOA at 100, and .6 MOA at 200.  I just swapped the barreled action into a McM stock, bedded it, and took the trigger down a hair.  It did need handloads to get there though.  FGMM ammo averaged 1 MOA out of that rig, I was starting to get disappointed at first.

Love the GAP camo, that is what I painted my first stock with.

None of the SPS rifles have a plastic triggerguard or floorplate.  No 700s have plastic floorplates.  I'm suprised it doesn't shoot any better after the changes than it did stock.  Well actually I'm not.  The 700SPS Tactial is highly accurate.

Well they must have changed that in the last month or so.  I've stripped and repainted several of them.

I think so as all I have seen before were metal. I want to replace it with a  magazine type bottom metal.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Mine has plastic on the trigger guard and floor plate.  Which doesn't bother me because it will be getting a dbm syst
em down the road.

EDIT!

Just checked again and talked to my buddy.  It has aluminum bottom metal with a really textured paint.

I waited about 40 years before I ever owned a 308, now I love it.  Nice thing about them is that they also work well in short barrel lightweight rifles like the Mod 7.  The same can be said for the 7mm-08.

Mine only has a 20" bbl and I absolutely love it.  Very accurate out to 700 or 800 yards and easy to carry for a precision rig.

Sam,
I can see you have been bit by the long range bug. If you don't reload yet, I predict you will soon. When people say you will save money, don't believe them. You will, however, get to shoot alot more for the same money! You will appreciate some great info that can be found here:

Thanks for posting that info.  For the moment my friend is reloading Ammo for me.  I don't have the budget or space atm to set up a reload bench.  But it's really saving me money.  Very thankful that he's able to do this for me lol.
